A Drawing Show of Artists in Philadelphia Selected by Alex Kanevsky and Bill Scott at The Philadelphia Sketch Club is an inspiring collection of drawings which stretches the imagination and boundaries of what one thinks of as drawings. From traditional pencil and charcoal drawings to abstract mixed media like gouache, acrylic and house paint, the show is a carefully curated exhibit displaying the state of the art of drawing as considered by two of Philadelphia’s finest artists. Instead of a salon style exhibit with art packed from floor to ceiling, the show gives each piece of artwork room to breath and the viewer the opportunity to examine the work without others elbowing for attention. The historic gallery/studio looks like a room in a museum.

DoNArTNeWs asked Alex Kanevsky about the process of assembling the collection for this extraordinary exhibition of diverse drawings. DoN said, “I know you know a lot of people.” Alex replied, “Well, Bill knows a lot more people than I do. The process was simple. We went to a coffee house, we sat down and tried to write a list of all the people who we know and liked. We figured since this is an educational show and did it because we wanted to see these people’s work in one place. We just invited everybody whose drawings spoke to us.”

Kanevsky continued, “And after that list, which initially was fairly limited, it kept on growing because every couple days after that meeting, I would call or Bill would call and say, ‘How about that person?’. And that’s pretty much how it happened.” DoN asked, “Did you do studio visits?” Alex said, “We did some studio visits. You know, this started with a presentation here about a year ago at The Sketch Club and we saw that it would be fun to do this show and we approached the president with the idea. But when it actually came down to organizing things I was away. I was away the whole summer, so I didn’t get to do many studio visits. I knew what people did and whoever I didn’t know Bill sent me the images over the internet. We did make some choices from the images because we knew what the work looked like in general.”

“These are people whose work we know and like. So it didn’t come out of the blue.” DoN asked about how Alex felt about the end result, he said, “I was so impressed. We were worried that it might look spotty or not very cohesive but once we hung it we were both really impressed with the level of the drawings. Some of the drawings here I just absolutely love them. There were some really good surprises, for example, Michael Rossman’s drawings, but I never met him. And I wanted to have those drawings herein the show because I had admired them for about ten years. Then there’s other drawings I like but I didn’t know what they would give us but never the less they are beautiful.”

We talked bout the influence of the internet and how images are flattened out because of screen resolution but Alex Kanevsky expressed his pleasure at the works when they arrived. He said, “There are some good surprises this way. Some of the work I didn’t know at all because they were one’s that Bill liked, but we kept each other in the loop. If I suggested something then I would send him images. It was a really interesting process. Every single drawing is something we are happy to have here.”

DoNArTNeWs talked with co-curator Bill Scott about the collaboration, “I think Alex approached me once up here about doing a show. And then we mentioned it to Bill Patterson and he said, ‘Sure.’ Then we met because he was about to do the Woodmere show, long before, but the one conscious decision was not to overlap, to give a chance to the people that were not in the juried show. We tried to, well it might be a bit of a rub, but we tried to not just have the same show again.”

DoN asked how Bill Scott decided? Was it the most memorable images? “We both picked people and asked them to send us pictures. About half of them got back to us but in the end each one of us picked ones we liked.” DoN asked, “So you each got to pick some? Was there cooperation?” Bill said, “Yeah, we did it all through e-mail when he was away. It was a lot of work.” How did selecting images from the internet work out? “I really like juried shows but for this each of us, if not both of us knew the artists work. So, I knew what I was looking at. I knew what they were and a lot of them I saw in person. I did a few studio visits, Amanda BushMary Page-Evans. Alex knew Richard TaranskyDoris Staffel, I like her. And John Nazarewycz, I love his work, I knew them. Eileen Goodman, I knew already. So, you know, there’s no point to it, it’s just pictures. We wanted to hang a spacious show so that everything would look important.”

Bill Scott said, “I’ve seen a lot of shows that are so over hung that you might get a migraine headache so that you don’t want to be there. You have to soothe everybody’s ego because they’re in the show, I want people to feel good for having come to see it. To feel inspired for having been here. I’d rather have a show where I feel like I’ve actually been somewhere rather than, ‘Let’s get out of here.’ I’d rather leave wanting to see more.”

Violent Silence

As DoN listens to DJ PolishedSolids weekly internet radio broadcast on Mixlr.com, the adrenaline from the past few days is dispersing with the music. The set this week is called Violent Silence, a genre hopping music mix with violence as this week’s theme. Maybe it’s the full moon but some folks are acting crazy as a Zombie Apocalypse out there.

As you might imagine, DoN‘s e-mail inbox is maxed out – over 10,000 un-read messages! With house-keeping in mind, DoN un-subscribed to dozens of newsletters and deleted hundreds of messages without malice of intent. All of the newsletters thanked me for my patronage – except one. DoN opened an e-mail thinking it would be another “are you sure?” message and instead it said, “Since you are being such an ass about things please unsubscribe “name withheld” form you banal reviews.” Note the typos.

DoNArTNeWs had reviewed this artist’s work about a dozen times over the years; all posts mentioning the artist have been deleted from this blog. To be clear, DoN receives no compensation for writing this blog. In fact, it costs money to maintain this site, travel to events and post blog stories. Even though the site has advertising through Amazon and CJ.com, the niche market DoN writes about does not produce any income. DoN writes for his own enjoyment, intellectual development and support for the Philadelphia art community he loves.

If you are using social media to promote your art, take it from DoN, insulting your promoters will not bring you more business or happiness. DoNArTNeWs will continue to post reviews about art in the most positive light possible, focussing on emerging artists, small galleries and studios. If a story about you doesn’t get posted, it’s not that DoN doesn’t like you or your work, only that time has run out since DoN is an army of one. Except for the wonderful Jeff Stroud who shares his photography with us with grace and gratitude.

The member show in the Stewart Room Gallery of The Philadelphia Sketch Club is a coveted spot to exhibit solo art shows.  The art team Anthony C and Karen M, long time active members of America’s oldest artist run art club are the featured artists for July and are breaking new ground artistically in the historic space because the show is team artwork and street based in style. Street art is a big part of Karen M and Anthony C’s art platform including free art, mail art, stickers and graffiti. Karen M talked about the content of the expansive show while we walked around the grand pool table. “This is a body of work that is about two years in the making. Along with our other projects. We always seem to be doing iconic images and popular culture, we reference things we like and things we think are important. And things that have messages.” said Karen M.

“Each piece is cut with an X-ACTO, sprayed onto canvas, each piece is unique because you can’t spray it the same every time.” Some of the pieces are familiar from other exhibitions, I wondered how much work was recent? The Mona Lisa is especially memorable.”Only one or two were in other shows.  This is new. We always work. We always have projects going and then when an opportunity come up for a show, we’ll go to our inventory and pick what we think would be appropriate. Now, with the Stewart Room, we know with The Philadelphia Sketch Club, it’s very traditional, a lot of people from PAFA and we wanted to do something that no one has ever seen.”

“So, we have fifty-one pieces here and we did the installation so that you come in and it’s all fresh paint. There might be criticism from hardened graffiti writers who say you’re selling out when your putting it on canvas. But, as I was talking to a Miami based graffiti writer, graffiti is evolving, and we have the stencil so there is no problem if we want to spray it somewhere else. If you know what I mean?” Playing dumb, like what? Karen M said, “Sidewalks, we don’t vandalize, we don’t spray on personal property but if something’s dilapidated or boarded up, that’s fair game.” That’s what graffiti is.  But Anthony C and Karen M approach the style as a way of communicating with an audience of their peers and collectors who gather their work from the street or buy it in a gallery. Karen M says, “Modern graffiti started in Philadelphia and then spread to New York. It started with Cornbread. Who we had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of years ago when the documentary about him debuted. And he said he was just in a detention center and always broke the balls of the cook because we wanted cornbread and they didn’t have it. So the name stuck. When he got out, he liked this girl, so he wanted to get her to notice him, so he looked at the transit route that she rode and he wrote his name at every stop.”

“So he just wrote, Cornbread and then eventually Chewy joined him and the birthplace of graffiti is Philadelphia and then it moved up into New York and it evolved and they did the trains, and people went all city. And then it went from just tagging to bombing and pieces. And now graffiti has evolved so much that there’s even graffiti classes, there’s legal walls, maybe some companies would want to hire a graffiti writer to advertise on the side of their store.” Another local graffiti artist NoseGo just did a building on 5th Street near South. “We know him from a gallery called Rare Breed that was one of the first graffiti galleries in back in the day. It was on 15th Street. A lot of writers gathered there, a lot of them knew each other from there, he sold paint, he sold markers, he sold videos, books…and it was a really good gathering ground for people that were doing work.”

The array of pop icons, cultural figures and persistent images presents the question of how to decide what to paint? Karen M said, “It’s intuitive. We’re influenced by punk rock, hip hop, Andy WarholBlek LaRat from Paris, the Godfather of street art, he’s done wheat pastes and stencils, he’s just wonderful. He saw all the rats of the city of Paris, so he started to stencils of them and we think he’s just wonderful, the Godfather of street art. Gotta give props to Blek and Cornbread.”

The absence of color is obvious with crisp white canvasses each offering a unique stencil and maybe a spurt of spray paint. “If you do a stencil on a wall or tag, it is usually just the flat black Rust-Oleum Flat Black is the pinnacle of graffiti paint. Now, they’ve got all kinds of crazy colors, there’s paint coming from Spain, all over the world, but, the true graffiti writers use the flat black Rustoleum. So we stay in that tradition.”

The exhibit is arranged thematically with pop icons, famous images and characters grouped loosely. “It’s a juxtaposition, we wanted people to say you really didn’t have the balls to do the Mona Lisa, did you? Yes, we drew the Mona Lisa and John Lennon, iconic for our time. On this wall we have Redd Foxx and on the opposite wall we have Malcolm X. And they were together when they were hoodlums and they both made such an impact on our culture: Redd Foxx eventually becoming iconic, comedian, television character and Malcolm X the leader of the Nation of Islam. And, we love to juxtapose images, we don’t do it with any rhyme or reason going back to when they put together the words hydrogen jukebox. We just juxtapose base on our intuition and design of the piece. So, the show was hung rather quickly and without too much…thinking about definite placement, we did it intuitively.” One grouping of characters appears to be all sociopaths. “We’re drawn to the darker side, we’re drawn to the sociopaths and the crazies, we like that. In pop culture and our friends.”

Karen M says, “We push the envelop. And we want to be known, well, we’re basically political artists. As any graffiti artist, when they put their name on the wall, that’s a political statement. I got interested in graffiti in the late seventies and the earlt eighties when I went to Mexico and there was the conflict in El Salvador. And every wall that had a space, had political graffiti about getting America out of El Salvador and to me that just sparks in me a love for the art which I carry to this day.”

“David Lynch is a big influence. When I was at Philadelphia College of Art we had a great film teacher, Dr. Ruth Pearlmutter, and showed us Eraserhead and I believe it was when it was first released and I just wrote pages and pages on the film. Anthony and I, my collaborator, are big fans of David Lynch. You can even see some of the influence on our YouTube channel and just the image of Henry with his hair all backlit looking all crazy just made a perfect stencil.”

Third Friday in Millville NJ is ten years old, the art crawl has become a nexus of art and culture in South Jersey.  A model for other towns using art to revitalize the downtown, Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts is a multi-use art space with galleries, gift shop and artist studios creating a hub of artistic activity.  Liz Nicklus, the interim Director of RRCA, and a founding board member said to DoN, “I was very honord when the board asked me to come back and be the interim director here and it’s working out to be wonderful so far.” Emergence is the first show at RRCA since Nicklus has assumed leadership, she says, “I have a wonderful Assistant Director who curated most of the show in the main gallery, Brandon Smith, a glass artist from Wheaton Arts so he has assembled a lot of artists that he knows.  Of course, we have Lilliana Didovic from Philadelphia, as well.  On the other side we have the center’s member artists and I think it’s a very successful show.  The artists in the main gallery are from all over from as far as New York and Philadelphia, in the other gallery are artists from all over South Jersey, they’re our Center artists, some are from Millville, some are from farther away.  This gives them an opportunity to show what they’ve been working on.”

“Benefits to joining include, besides getting to show, you have opportunities to take classes, reduced rates on entries to other shows, a reduced commission, there are a lot of benefits to being a Center member.  It’s a good place for people to get their feet wet if they’re just starting out in the art world.  Folks say ‘How do I get a chance to show my stuff?’  Well, here’s a place to start, and Center membership is not as expensive as being an associate member and also you don’t have to be juried in.”

Liz says, “I’m a big fan of mixed media and I love to see what people do with found objects.  That’s my first love anyway.  Every piece in Emergence you can walk up to and become absorbed in whether it’s because of the process, or just the reflections, or the detail, it’s a very captivating show.”
