Out of Hand

Out of Hand, Gina Michaels at iMPeRFeCT Gallery

Blue Fingers, bronze, 22 x 17 x 14″, Rushen (detail), bronze, 20 x 13 x 10″

Out of HandGina Michaels’ solo show at iMPeRFeCT Gallery

October 12 – November 2, 2013, Artist’s Reception Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013 5:00-8:00pm

From the beginning, Gina Michaels sculpture is Out of Hand. Her sculpture practice starts in a sandbox. She presses her hands (and feet) into casting sand, sculpting directly in the mold. She then ladles molten bronze directly into the hollows created by the body. The resulting forms are welded into “Hand Plants,” at once animal, vegetable and mineral. They can be read as lovingly cultivated hybrids, or as random and disturbing mutations. The work is full of visual puns and double entendres, with a dose of slapstick. Sometimes modeled figures perch in trees that grow out of the palm of a hand, adding a narrative, mythic dimension. The work can be as small as a few inches high, or eight feet tall. In addition to creating sculpture, Michaels makes nature prints, which will also be on view.

Gina Michaels work will be at iMPeRFeCT Gallery in Germantown from October 12 – November 2. There will be an artist’s reception on Saturday October 12, 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. iMPeRFeCT Gallery is a not-for-profit alternative art space that is both international and community based. Founders Renny Molenaar and Rocio Cabello bring their experience running alternative spaces in New York, contributing a new voice to the Philadelphia art community.

The Levoy Theatre, a Vision for Millville

The Levoy Theatre‘s renovation took many years and was finally accomplished in 2012. The story of how the town of Millville New Jersey brought this theater back to prominence after years of neglect involves the heroic efforts of dedicated citizens, theater people, artists, and public officials. It is a story that may inspire other American towns struggling with a poor economy. The Levoy Theatre sends out the message that art can indeed make life better, for individuals as well as communities. – John Thornton

“The story of the Levoy is the story of the people who built it, owned it, worked in it and patronized it. It is a story filled with triumph and defeat, happiness and sadness. It is exactly the story you might expect from an historic icon that’s commanded Millville’s High Street for over a century.

The first Levoy Theatre filled a ten year void left in Millville after the 1898 fire that destroyed the Wilson Opera House (once at High and Sassafras Sts.), Millville’s largest theatre of the 19th century. By 1908 Millville needed a new source of entertainment, and William “Pop” Somers of Atlantic City and Somers Point fame came to Millville seeing the opportunity for his Levoy.” – The Levoy Theatre website

Artists’ House Gallery

Artists' House Gallery, Old City Arts District, Philadelphia

Dear Friends of Artists’ House Gallery,

In October, a new gallery, owned and directed by Tony Morinelli, will open at 57 N. Second Street, Philadelphia, the former premises of Artists’ House Gallery.

We are pleased that the new owner has decided to dedicate his gallery to the same mission that Artists’ House Gallery has followed for the last twenty-two years. That mission is:

“To feature the work of outstanding emerging and experienced artists, frequently from the Philadelphia area. Artists’ House offers collectors and art lovers the opportunity to purchase excellent works of art at affordable prices.”

We wish Tony Morinelli much success in his new gallery which, by special arrangement with us, will also be named “Artists’ House Gallery”. We hope that you will visit this new gallery on First Fridays, other receptions and many times to enjoy each new exhibit. We greatly appreciate the support, interest and friendship from our many friends over the past twenty-two years.

“Tony’s initial First Friday will be on October 4th, and I will be there on First Friday to assist Tony in opening his new gallery.”

You can contact the gallery at a new address: info@artistshouse.com and visit the site at www.artistshouse.com

Thank you. Sincerely,

Lorraine Riesenbach

The Painting Buenos Aires 2012 trip was partially financed by 40 “backers” many of whom chose as their pledge reward original drawings, oil paintings or “fileteado” panels. Charles had a great art exhibition/milonga upon his return at Buttonwood Dance Studio and all of the patrons appear to be pleased with their purchases!
