The Beauty Shop continues their history of promoting exciting new artists; the current show by artist/illustrator/designer Niki Bombshell combines brutalist abstract expressionism, naive primitivist drawings and bold drippy paintings.  Unframed and tacked to the walls, the works are real eye-catchers and very reasonably priced.  DoN especially enjoyed the sloppy hand-written labels and the total lack of self consciousness in presentation; you can tell the artist loves splashing paint, layering images, ripping the edges and moving on to the next project.  And, oh yeah, the coffee is great – The Beauty Shop Cafe has totally transformed the neighborhood from a place to avoid to a destination for hipsters, moms and geeks – thanks Jon!

Participating in the annual Philadelphia Open Studio Tours means really putting yourself out there for all to see.  Being an artist model also puts one under a focussed gaze, the experience inspired DoN to ask some of his artist friends to contribute works created when DoN modeled at The Plastic Club and the Philadelphia Sketch Club.  Thank you to all the fine artists who provided their work, it feels so narcissistic but DoN LoVeS the attention!

Karl Olsen & Kim Martin“MAKE ME CRAZY MAKE ME THINK”
Location:  Plastic Club, 247 S. Camac St., Philadelphia
Opening Reception:  Saturday Sept 26th 6pm – 8pm
Reception and Presentation:  Sunday September 27th 1pm – 4pm
The “Make Me Crazy Make Me Think” exhibition is the culmination of ten months of collaborative work by Karl Olsen and Kim Martin. The concept was to paint our individual self portraits together, side by side at the same time, on the same canvas. The process of painting “ourselves” in this relative setting, the work reflects those dynamics in subtle and sometimes dramatic ways. How we worked, discussed, and managed the totality of each painting was tense, thought provoking, stimulating and included continual compromise with individual and collective interpretation.The result was 11 highly differing pieces averaging 6′ x 6′.

First Prize, Jason Scuilla, Pallazzo with Spirits, Dance of Salome, etching.  As Dr. Deb Miller and H & H judge Kathryn McFadden of Fleisher Art Memorial pointed out, there are no women in the image, only the results of decisions made by women are portrayed in the etching.  DoN heard a statistic the other day that highlighted if more women were in positions of power there would be less conflict in the world.
