BLACKWHITE ANDINBETWEEN show is already over but DoN is still thinking about the art installation that focussed simply on black and white.  The gallery in Old City installed a three person show of black and white artworks by Philadelphia region artists: Trish ThompsonTom Hlas & Wendy Wolf. The May First Friday crawl is all about discovering new art talent and 110 Church Gallery, off of 2nd Street in a quirky store front, feels so comfortable it’s like an oasis from the art mobs on the prowl offering a delight for the eye for the weary art crawler.

Tom Hlas explained to DoN how he meticulously crafted the woven collage, working each edge and surface of the paper with deceptive intensity.  The group of three black and white collages all had red dots, Tom was grinning ear to ear with the satisfaction that his idea reacted with his audience in the best way.

Wendy Wolf installed a site specific piece composed of string and and organically shaped cut outs that resemble Locust leaves.  The pristine white elements create a pattern of shadow and shades of gray that only appear because the mind has to process the information somehow. The taut strings call to mind musical instruments, the random leaves striking chords in a holographic-like space between the strings and the wall.  During last weekend’s Art in the Open event at Schuylkill Banks Park the artist installed a massive mixed media piece using her unique language of simple elements in a tree near the Philadelphia Art Museum.  Her work weathers well and interacts with the environment in a pleasing poetic song-like work of art, one is still on view outside the art gallery.

100 Faces of Bob is over one hundred mixed media art objects mounted on the wall at Off the Wall Gallery created by outgoing President of The Plastic Club, Bob Jackson.  Last week DoN watched a movie at The Plastic Club‘s monthly art salon, shot in 2006, of Bob Jackson‘s collections and studio, a consummate pack rat collector and inspired artist.  Jackson collects objet trouve’ then transmogrifies the collected elements, found at flea markets, yard sales and antique shops into anthropomorphic portraits.

Off the Wall Gallery usually hosts group show but gave over the whole space to Bob Jackson’s thesis: attractive, fun, visionary art that’s affordable.  Bob Jackson has been leading The Plastic Club for many years, he’s seen it all, good and bad, and synthesized the information into an art style that is aspirational and accessible.  Like his ball point pen drawings on typing paper, the 100 Faces each express the artist’s hand, thought, effort and time.  Anthropomorphism is practically the original art, the Venus of Willendorf speaks to us over mellenia, Bob Jackson is able to tap into our deepest cultural memories and speak to us here in the future.

The Off the Wall Gallery consistently installs thought provoking and relevant art shows. Usually the installations are juried group shows offering emerging artists opportunities to show their work with established artists. Art is part of the business model at Dirty Franks Bar, space on their wall is coveted and their sales record is really good.  100 Faces of Bob will be remembered as one of the great moments in Philadelphia art history, the show looks like it will be sold out.  Each piece is only $50.00.  Bob Jackson‘s legacy will be a strong, real, measurable impact on the Philadelphia art community, DoN has personally cried on Bob’s shoulder over art matters and know’s he has counseled and supported hundreds of other artists with assurances, solutions and advice.  Creating a wonderful experience design, the show offers so many lessons in art making, marketing, networking and socializing from a master Philadelphia artist, 100 Faces of Bob reveals the beautiful face of a friend.

Marjorie Grigonis and Kristine Flannery‘s exhibit at Third Street Gallery (on Second) is a compare and contrast in action painting and abstract expressionism. Marjorie Grigonis calls her collection Present TenseKristine Flannery‘s exhibit is called The Multitudes; Grigonis’ mixed media and paintings uses mark-making and color fields with emotive color and Flannery’s action paintings exude energy. DoN talked with Marjorie Grigonis May’s First Friday in Old City.

How did you get involved with Third Street Gallery?  “I’ve been part of the gallery for at least ten years.  Someone invited me to put my work up and be juried in and I’ve been part of it ever since.  I was one of the directors a couple years back which is a job no one covets, it gets passed on every two years. But, it’s a good  gallery, it’s good people and I think a really great showing space with the windows and the location.”

DoN asked Marjorie Grigonis to describe her style, a combination of collage and painting, “Well, the painting is very much gestural and early was somewhat based on abstract expressionism but it’s been modified. As you can see, it’s not that free anymore. But the looseness that I started with, I find painting really hard, I struggle with it and I edit out. There’s probably six paintings underneath that painting. I just paint over, scrape off, and paint over.”

“I started looking at all the scraps of things in my studio and making collages and it was fun. But I realized that I was thinking , in this show particularly, that there’s not any content, and there’s not a lot of content here, but, I was thinking just about the general anxiety of personal and global and I think a lot of these sort of reflected that. The woman holding her hand, the fear itself, I think even the paintings are just a little bit anxious, not totally.  I think there’s a good time going on in some of them.”

“I don’t mean to be a downer, I just think of me, there’s just a little more of a sense of that, sort of, pervading everybody and everything right now. I’m sensitive to that and I think humor is a way to deal with that and so I just thought some of these were pretty funny.  Maybe ironic.”

DoN commented to the artist that anxiety is not what he felt from the colorful abstractions and that he overheard people saying how much they liked them, “Well, I’m glad because it’s partly just me, probably a lot of it’s me.”  DoN said, “Well, you are the artist.”

Kristine Flannery‘s action paintings represent movement and gesture through space.  The energetic marks and swipes of paint each try to capture a moment of movement, the paint permitted to be watery and move on it’s own, sometimes smeared into submission.  DoN spoke only briefly to the artist and her husband, she was fatigued at the end of the First Friday festivities but if you go to the Third Street Gallery website there’s a good statement about her goals with the show.

915 Spring Garden Art Studios held their Spring open studio tour April 29th, Spike the biker, Jeff the photographer and DoN converged on the fifth floor of the art studio building with the idea of visiting each floor’s artists.  The old industrial building, by the decaying aqua duct on Spring Garden Street, is divided into studio spaces and has hosted Philadelphia artists for thirty years.  For a time the studios were open only once a year, in the Fall now coinciding with Philadelphia Open Studio Tours city wide art crawl, but many artists in the building opened up for a Springtime tour offering a chance to meet the artists in their work spaces.  The first studio our trio visited was Laura D. Adams, a self described realist painter, displaying a group of paintings she had readied for an upcoming show at Artists’ House Gallery in Old City arrayed along the sunny wall of her space, offering us a great preview for her art show opening June 1st.

DoN asked Laura D. Adams what she was doing to prepare for the show at Artists’ House Gallery? “I first agreed to do the show back in May, so I started preparing the work for it, really, in July.  I started doing the prep work, planning what work would be in it.  I’ve just been working steadily all year towards it, there will be some older works from last year but there will be ten or twelve new paintings.  Which is a lot for me to do in a year, I work really slowly.”

DoN questioned Laura about her realist style and if she had a theory of what’s real or not?  “Less now than before, I used to be interested in a kind of almost pushing that boundary.  Like that painting of the door that’s on the floor.  I’m not doing as much trompe l’oeil as I used to, that’s from about three years ago and last year I did some 3D sculptural paintings, they were rolls of tape where I cut them out in the shape of a roll of tape and then I painted the whole thing, all the text, price tags, to look exactly like a roll of tape.  I did four of them and then hung them on the wall.  The same kind of thing, trying to play with our perception of reality.”

Is there a distinction between realism and trompe l’oeil?  Laura D. Adams said, “I kind of veered off, it’s still trompe l’oeil, in the sense that it’s really solid space, I’m still interested in really compressing the picture plane.  But I got really interested in patterns, so that’s kind of been a thing this year.  Fabric and textiles, I love detail, so that’s a way to explore a lot of detail.”

The Center for Emerging Visual Artists (CFEVA), in cooperation with Culture IrelandThe PhotoIreland Festival, and Broadstone Studios, presents an international exchange of exhibitions – Interchange: Contemporary Photography & Video from Ireland, and Adapt: Contemporary Photography & Video by CFEVA Fellows from the US. This exchange was created to enhance the artistic dialogue between Philadelphia and Dublin and to promote collaboration between local and international artists. The exhibition in Philadelphia, Interchange: Contemporary Photography and Video from Ireland, was curated by Angela Duignan and features works by Michelle Browne, Padraig Cunningham & Linda Shevlin, Angela Duignan, Michael Fortune, Niamh O’Connor, Mandy O’Neill, and David J. Pierce. It is an exhibition of contemporary artists from Ireland, which explores the narrative mode through the mediums of video, audio, and photography. The works exhibited encapsulate and reflect aspects of identity, heritage, story telling, ritual, and social change. They present a view of a contemporary Ireland – its culture and heritage – while drawing parallels to a wider global context.”

Philadelphia artist Amy Stevens stayed in Roscommon with Angela Duignan and her two daughters while on an artist exchange to Ireland.  The fellow artists became fast friends and concocted a scheme to bring photography and video from Ireland to Philadelpha and vice versa.  Amy is going back to Ireland this summer with the CFEVA contingent featuring Noah Addis, Joelle Jensen, Allison Kaufman, Michael Mergen, Tim Portlock, Jeffrey Stockbridge, and Kimberly Witham curating the exhibit for The PhotoIreland Festival, a month long photography festival.  Angela Duignan told DoN, “It’s an exhange between Ireland and the States.  Amy came over for a three week artist residency and stayed with me while she was there and out of that friendship we’ve created an exchange show.  It’s taken two years for it to come together, find the spaces and all.”  Amy said, “Since I went through the CFEVA program I thought it would be a good fit.  It’s a nice exchange, it’s a good way to do it.”

In Angela Duignan‘s address to the audience gathered in the gallery she said, “First I’d like to thank Amy and CFEVA for taking this on and the huge generosity of bringing this show over from Ireland.  I’d particularly like to thank Amy Stevens for her incredible work hanging the show and organizing it.  Her show will be brought over to Ireland in July as a part of The PhotoIreland Festival

 “We’ll start off with Mic (Michael) Fortune’s work, he’s from Wexford, east coast of Ireland, he works in video, photography and audio.  This particular piece is three video pieces, for three years, each year, he photographed and videoed his mother who dressed up on Halloween.  And she goes next door to her mother’s house to try and play with her head.  There’s actually six years of video footage.  He’s also working on a documentary on folklore and heritage and his background is an educator and he’s presented at 120 shows in the last year all over the world in film festivals as well as gallery spaces.”

“In the video projection is Michelle Browne’s video piece…Linda Shevlin, shot in Belfast… and the third is David J. Pierce, shot in Dublin.”  The gallery was dark for the video and projections; the photographs are displayed in the anti-chamber and hall. In the corner of the darkened gallery is a strange chair, a semi-circular red chair with high sides and headphones.  Angie explained, “It’s a ten minute audio of my daughter telling her version of The Princess and the Pea story.  It is connected to the large print outside of the girl on a stack of mattresses.  The base of that piece is how memory changes as the story is told over time, the story is remembered and changed, on and on.”  Angie Duignan explained to DoN that she was in a shop with a stack of mattresses, she put her daughter up top and took some shots.  But decided to dress up her little girl and bring her back for a more refined photographic narrative.

IIn the hall is a group of portraits of boxers, photographer Mandy O’Neill said, “My work is about particular groups of people or individuals through an instinctual desire to get closer to another part of the world.  The images I’m presenting in the show were taken between 2007 and 2009 in a boxing hall called Saint Xavier’s in the inner city of Dublin.  They’ve been exhibited nationally and internationally, most notably in the European Month of Photography in Berlin and Gallery of Photography in Dublin.  Around 2007 when the work began Ireland was in the grips of the so-called Celtic Tiger, everything seemed to be going really fast, excessive consumerism was the order of the day.  This is something I never felt part of; I felt a longing for something more authentic and simple.

The image of the lone figure of the boxer, there’s a romanticism attached to this that I think resonates around the world.  Norman Mailer stated, “Boxing is a metaphor for life…’, I saw the boxer as an embodiment of this idea and a pared down more authentic existence.  I also like the idea of being able to come back into our own bodies rather than buying all this stuff required to make us happy.  The particular club I chose to shoot at turned out to be a great place, the camaraderie, care and support for the young kids around the area was amazing and they would make you feel at home just by not making you feel you were in the way.  I was in their training area in a corner with my camera and lights while they were skipping and jumping around.  The smells and sound of the place became familiar to me and the bell rings every three minutes and is followed by a one-minute break.  The subjects were all filmed within this one-minute break in an attempt to capture this heightened physical excitement.  My assistant would run and grab somebody and then we had thirty seconds to grab the shot before they went back.  The title Exhale comes from this pair of struggle then respite and always trying to move slightly forward.  I saw it as a general metaphor for life.”
