Art Ability 2012, An International Juried Exhibition and Sale of Art and Fine Crafts by Artists with Physical, Cognitive, Hearing and Visual Disabilities at Bryn Mawr Rehab Center in Malvern, PA is in a word – massive! Thousands of entries are juried to a manageable 600 or so artworks displayed throughout the modern medical facility outside of Philadelphia. Maria Crean is a textile artist from Belfast, Northern Ireland and her cross stitch sampler is a wonderful metaphor for the art collection. Collage and Mixed Media at The Plastic Club is 121 unique works of art using every sort of media imaginable from traditional magazine rip-outs to Swarovsky crystals. The tradition of the art gallery is to hang every entry, this show was open to non-members, and then awards are selected from the entire show. This policy offers new artists a place to show along side more established ones but usually the quality is high, prize winners can be first time artists or art veterans. The collage show is fun and quirky, with Dada-esque ready-mades and Dali-inian surrealism, sculptures and photo-montages, micro to macro, the ground is evenly covered with eye catching extravagance.

Kira Grennan won First Prize for her collage of photos taken while living with friends in Brooklyn, thus the title. The artist explained to DoN that the artwork uses traditional collage techniques but is atmospheric and loaded with narrative of her time in NYC.

Collage and Mixed Media at The Plastic Club is on exhibit through September 22nd, 2012.

The Art of the Flower show at The Philadelphia Sketch Club usually coincides with the Philadelphia Flower Show in March while it’s still cold and drab outside after the long Winter. But moving the annual celebration of floral art to the dog days of Summer is a good reminder to appreciate the gorgeous gardens in full bloom during this withering weather. The Art of the Flower show is a favorite of the member artists, it’s theme of natural splendor a motif filled with evocative beauty and drama.

This painting just makes me happy. The way the composition flips back and forth from abstract to still life to impressionist to naive expressionism is just plain fun.

Betty MacDonald’s piece is multiple mono-prints on paper transferred from common paint stir sticks. The sense of storytelling and descriptive imagery ties together a lifetime of experiences. References to painting as utilitarian and decorative practices, flowers as design and symbols of nature and inferences to embroidery, handwork and decorative art creates a narrative of how art influences our lives and nature influences our art.

The gallery at The Philadelphia Sketch Club is brimming like a huge bouquet of flowers of all kinds presented in all manner os media but to my eye painting is dominant. Whether watercolor, oils, or acrylics, artists find flowers irresistible for study and painting, images of flowers were found buried at Pompeii and have long been symbols of personalities or special occasions. You can’t help but feel good when you see all the exuberant color, fluid shapes and sensuous compositions interpreted by serious artists.

Corrina Mehiel is half way through the Masters Degree Program in Studio Arts at the University of the Arts, a program lasting almost three years and is independently driven with 45 artists from all over the world.  Corrina explained her public art project, Bike (PH)ix this way, “I am interested in the unspoken social conversation that’s going on. In each city there’s a different kind of conversation happening. I moved here last June and I had been to Philly a couple times but not really that much. I was really struck by the amount of stuff existing on the street and the street life here. People that are existing with objects that are either this kind of free-cycle thing that happens in Philly where people just take stuff but in other cities it’s taken to a donation center.”

“Here it’s just outside your door. It’s like this unwritten code about that ‘it’s fine to just take things’ and then beyond that it seems that almost theft is acceptable here. Just this culture that the bikes get stripped and people don’t come back to get the parts and students coming out of the university just leave their bicycles when they go back home, so, to me the city is talking about a kind of detachment or something. In other places I’ve lived humans have such a strong object attachment and our identities are so wrapped up in our objects. Things that we are about, you know?”

“So, I’ve been thinking about these street objects – non-functional street objects like bikes, pay phones that don’t have phones, newspaper boxes with no newspapers, all these things that sort of exist here, that are permanent, I felt like,’Well? I guess they just exist.’, so, I never would have imagined the City would remove these bike frames. I was looking at them, thinking about it, thinking about it and then I did some work related to this, a sticker book collection, I did ink paintings of these objects as stickers sort of questioning where do these things belong. We know the function but they don’t have a function. I made a book, a typical book, referencing a coloring book or a book from childhood that would be blank outlines recognizable as Philly and pages of these stickers in color of these non-useable objects to give the viewer the opportunity to at least think about where these things go in the city.”

Corrina Mehiel continued, “Thinking about the bikes, though, I have this love of transportation and movement. I traveled a lot, it’s like a compulsion, not like crazy, somewhere between doing my work and being a tourist. And just going to places and existing there with no money, it’s weird, I’ve gone to India many, many times and just to be…I like doing that kind of travel and then being in cities in the U.S. is a little more hyper-aware of objects.”

“I’m interested in this conversation but I’m also thinking about the idea of responsibility in the context of a utopian society and who’s to say what responsibilities we should be taking on. How much should we want to clean up our space? I don’t know if it matters. But, these ideas point out the need to change the feeling of a neighborhood and that it leads to people taking care of their homes and they all layer on top of each other.”

Katy the ArT DoG photo-bombs this pic of the site specific installation created by Simone Spicer for the Art in the Open weekend at Schuylkill Banks Park.  The artist gathered plastic or plasticized trash, decorated each piece with paint or collage, then strung them like beads along the bike path.  The effect was like a waterline where all this wacky trash had washed up on the banks of the nearby river commenting on the ecological effects of plastic trash.  But Simone Spicer also lavished time and effort on each element accentuating the careful design of these daily-use objects and the efforts of designers and corporations to make them attractive enough to buy.  And throw away.

Art in the Open 2012 was a big commitment by the participating artists – three days set up as a working artist along the bike trail from Lombard Street towards the Philadelphia Art Museum.  The point wasn’t to sell work but to demonstrate how art is made, engage with the public, raise questions and answer questions.  The artists are rewarded with a show at The Philadelphia Seaport Museum for the rest of the Summer opening June 15th. The experience of strolling along the trail with the dog is one of DoN‘s favorite activities, the addition of art was like an alternate reality for an afternoon, it would be cool to see more artists along the scenic path all the time.

Photographer, Jeff StroudDoN and Katy the ArT DoG walked along the bike path in the hot Spring sun and stopped at a shady tree where artist Barbara Gesshel had set up her studio out of the sun.  Using the tree as a work surface Barbara Gesshel rubbed charcoal into large sheets of paper, using the ridges of the bark to create a naturalistic atmosphere to her drawing.  Working with nature instead of against it, Gesshel’s use of charcoal, the charred remnants of dead trees, onto the living surface of a tree to make her drawings is poetic and inspiring.

Cyanotype is one of the oldest types of photography there is, artist Erika Bergere set up on the lawn with her baby and made the beautiful Prussian blue photographs using only the light of the sun and a solution of potassium ferricyonide and ferric ammonium.  The wet paper hung out on a line to dry while the family lolled in the shade on the grass.

Stained glass artist Justin Tyner was one of the only artists who needed to connect to the grid, he made this beautiful rose window outside with his soldering iron.  Shortly after this photo was taken the window was mounted in a round wooden frame on the lawn on a hill near the art museum.

Artist Jeannie Moberly used a variety of media from her art box to create the drawings on long expanses of paper that she planted in the ground with wood dowels.  The maze-like effect was bold and beautiful at the bend in the river.  Sitting in the bright sun with a big hat and long sleeves to guard her arms, the artist contentedly worked out the ambitious drawing while bikers, walkers and gawkers stopped by to check out the colorful display of art.

Flowers made from battle caps – gorgeous! Abdelkrim Djennas flattens out bottle caps with cuts along the edge transforming refuse into delightful dumpster diver art.  Like tramp artists of old, he takes what society discards and makes something desirable and pretty.  The metal flowers sprouting in the woods near the art museum were whimsical yet prescient with a question of whether Nature will be overtaken by man made objects.

Using found materials, Nicole Donnelly wove a structure of twigs and branches around one of the boulders along the river.  Obviously temporary but the piece touched a childhood nerve of playing in the woods.  The rocks along the river make convenient resting spots, Donnelly’s hut-like structure evokes Clan of the Cave Bear-like racial memories and the satisfaction of creating shelter.

George Apotsos used simple chicken wire to create his ethereal Occupy People. The wire torsos planted in the Earth at oblique angles, each faceless head looking in a different direction evoking the mixed message mantra of the Occupy movement. We can see right through them. Using a mannequin as a form, George Apotsos molds and trims the common material, using heavy gloves and strong shears, into a metaphor for modern life.
