The Natives – Salt Print Project
” The Natives – Salt Print Project ” by Joshua Marowitz
March 22 – April 28, 2013
On the heals of a two month motorcycle trip to document native plants through different eco-regions across the United States, artist Joshua Marowitz brings forth an exhibition not to be missed. Using the oldest photographic process know as “salt printing”, the artist captures the exquisite, almost regal tone of these important botanical specimens by providing infinite detail and hand applied color to the image. Join the Light Room for an exhibition of art inspired by historic photography and bio-diversity conservation.

ARTISTS Against Hunger Project
When local artists Linda Dubin Garfield and Susan DiPronio read that in parts of Philadelphia over 50% of the children go to bed hungry, they knew they had to do something. They decided to create change the only way they could- through art. They chose The Food Trust which helps bring nourishment and education to the neighborhoods in question. They created ARTISTS Against Hunger Project and planned several events such as the Pre- Fringe birthday party for Linda in May, 2012 which raised over $700 in lieu of gifts. Next, they created a “Yummy Rainbow” mural banner as part of Robert Farid Karimi’s Cooking Show: The Diabetes of Democracy at the Asian Arts Initiative with pre-schoolers from a Head Start class in South Philadelphia also in May, 2012. They participated in the 2012 Fringe Festival doing mixed media memoir workshops focusing on What Nurtures Us and Food Deserts in September, 2012.
Now they are organizing the ARTISTS Against Hunger Exhibition May 2-5, 2013, at the DaVinci Art Alliance, 704 Catharine Street in South Philadelphia which will feature art from artists from all over the city, juried by Moe Brooker, Artist and Chairman of the Mayor’s Commission of the Arts. Many different styles and media will be represented. All the work will be fine art and for sale. Checks and cash will be accepted. No credit cards. There will be a Gala Reception open to the public on Thursday, April 2, 6-8 PM, First Friday from 6-8 PM and Gallery hours on Saturday and Sunday, 1-5 PM. Proceeds benefit The Food Trust. Let art nourish your soul to fed our children. The Food Trust works to improve access to healthy, affordable food and to educate children and families about nutrition. Flora + Fauna, Wendy Wolf at 161 West Gallery
Wendy Wolf, 161 West Gallery, Flora + Fauna, 161 West Cecil B. Moore Avenue, Philadelphia
“Because it’s all collaborative, they sort of all come back and help out after they do their show. Which is cool. Wendy was really excited to do wheat paste before her show. And she said she’ll come back and do more because she loved it.”
There is a large elaborate white wheat pasted paper design, fluid, almost floral, pasted to the front of the gallery. Jessica Murphy, 161 West Gallery owner, took DoN on a tour of the developing arts center, there’s a large interior courtyard perfect for parties, picnics, music and art installations. The walls are already becoming mural-ized with plans for more color to come this Spring. 161 West Gallery has been located at 161 West Cecil B. Moore Avenue, Philadelphia, since July, 2012.
“The building took a lot to get ready, to clean and paint. That took about two months. The current show will be up the whole month of March. There’s a show the 16th and then do special appointments.” – Jessica Murphy
