RECLAIM | REDISCOVER | REANIMATE, Destination FrankfordAfter years of neglect, the 4600 block of Paul Street in Frankford is beginning a new life. Destination Frankford is transforming a formerly vacant storefront into an energetic art venue. The temporary pop-up art gallery will accelerate the process of neighborhood revitalization in Frankford.

Three separate exhibitions will each focus on one part of the theme:

RECLAIM | REDISCOVER | REANIMATE

RECLAIM will feature members of the Philadelphia Dumpster Divers. Saturdays from April 19 to May 17, 2014, the Philadelphia Dumpster Divers will RECLAIM discarded materials and transform them into new art forms. Seventeen artists who see the possibilities in trash and other under-utilized resources will bring a new awareness to the concept of “upcycling “to Frankford.

Participating Philadelphia Dumpster Divers include:

Sara Benowitz, Ellen Benson, Neil Benson, Carol Cole, Randy Dalton, Dan Enright, Joanne Hoffman, Linda Lou Horn, Ann Keech, Susan Moloney, Eva Preston, Susan Richards, Ellen Sall, Joel Spivak, Jim Ulrich, Sally Willowbee, Burnell Yow!

REDISCOVER | Seven local photographers | Saturdays, May 24 to June 21.

REANIMATE | Members of Philadelphia Sculptors | Saturdays, June 28 to July 26.

Each show will have its own opening reception that will spill over into the street and emerging pocket park next door. The public is invited to listen to live music, enjoy the offerings of food trucks, and peruse a local crafts market.

Destination Frankford is an arts-based initiative using MARKETING and CREATIVE PLACEMAKING to enhance and expand the resources of the Frankford’s growing ARTS, ARTISANAL INDUSTRY, and CREATIVE BUSINESS economy.

Destination Frankford is a project of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission. Local partners include the Frankford Community Development Corporation, Globe Development Group, and Philadelphia Sculptors.

Destination Frankford is supported by a grant from ArtPlace America, a collaboration of leading national and regional foundations, banks and federal agencies accelerating creative placemaking across the US.

4+Towns 4 Art:
2nd Annual Open Studio Tour
Featuring 25 artists in Southern New Jersey
Saturday, April 5, 2014, 11am – 5pm
South Jersey community invited into artist studios to learn about the creative process. Artists collaborate to present original works for sale to the public.

4+ Towns 4 Art, founded by Haddon Township fiber artist Jennifer Talarico, presents the second annual Open Studio Tour. Showcasing artists in four towns in 2013, the Studio Tour has doubled in size for 2014. Eight towns are highlighted — Barrington, Collingswood, Haddonfield, Haddon Heights, Haddon Township, Merchantville, Oaklyn, and Pennsauken — with 25 artists participating. Studio disciplines include painting, ceramics, fiber arts, drawing/illustration, photography, sculpture, mosaic, collage, leather work, and book art.

4+ Towns 4 Art is a celebration of visual art in the South Jersey community. With a mission to give local, independent artists a platform from which to share their creative process with the community in which they live, 4+ Towns 4 Art intends to encourage the financial support of those artists by presenting their work for sale directly out of their studios.

Talarico says, “One of the joys I got out of last year’s tour was to see the artists’ enthusiasm for sharing their spaces with the public. One of them even had an addition built onto her back yard shed. Naturally she wanted to enlarge her work space, but it was also important to her to make it more accessible. The Studio Tour is every bit as inspiring for the artists as it is for the public!”

The Second Annual Open Studio Tour is free & open to the public. All members of the community are welcome to visit the studios on Saturday, April 5, 2014, from 11am to 5pm. Artists will be demonstrating and displaying their creations. There will be an artist reception following the Tour at: EilandArts Gallery, 21 S. Centre St., Merchantville from 5:30pm – 8pm.

Art in City Hall issues a call for artists for the upcoming exhibition in historic City Hall. Did you know that of the 10 largest cities in the United States, Philadelphia has the most bicycle commuters per capita? We also have over 200 miles of designated bike lanes, and a goal of installing thousands of new bike racks in the coming years. Recently, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia in partnership with the City’s Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy received a Knights Arts Challenge grant to install artist-designed bike racks in six locations throughout Center City. The Art Gallery at City Hall will feature those designs this spring. To complement this presentation and support Philadelphia’s growing bicycle culture, artists from the region are invited to submit art that utilizes bicycle parts and explore themes of sustainability, health and the urban environment. Found object and kinetic sculpture, two dimensional designs, and works that explore the mechanics of movement are encouraged.

Rules for Entry

Eligibility

Open to professional and self-taught artists and graduate students from the Philadelphia region working in all media, including the five-county Delaware area.

Exhibition Sites

Exhibitions are generally presented in the public spaces of City Hall. Bike pARTs will be show-cased in the Art Gallery at City Hall, which is part of the Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, Room 116 (near the East Portal Market St. entrance – first floor) and hallway display cases on the first and second floors (near the Offices of the Mayor).

Exhibition display case dimensions are 84” H x 94” W x 30”D. There are 7 display cases. The Art Gallery is 800 square feet of space. Works that exceed the dimensions of the display cases will be featured in the gallery.

1. Deadline for submission: Received by Friday, February 28, 4 pm. No exceptions. There is no entry fee.

2. Please submit up to 4 works as jpegs on a CD. Each image should be no larger than 1MB. Please call or email if you have questions.

3. Each jpeg file name should correlate with the entry form. You may include up to 3 details of each work.

4. Each artist must include a brief artist statement (no longer than two paragraphs) and resume as Word documents or PDF.

5. Return the completed entry form with your digital submission and include a S.A.S.E ONLY if you wish to have your disc returned to you.

6. If you are unable to submit work in a digital format, please contact Art In City Hall for assistance.

Selection and Installation of Exhibition

Accepted artists will be notified by phone or email. You can call to verify submission status. All work must be in good condition and ready for installation (i.e., hooks, wires, etc.). Artists are responsible for assisting with installation of works which require special attention or extensive demands of time.

The City, the Art in City Hall Exhibitions Committee and/or curators reserve the right to change the content of the exhibition, including the removal of artwork.

Delivery of Work

The time of delivery and installation of artwork will be arranged with each participating artist after notification of acceptance. Artists or artists’ galleries are responsible for shipping and delivery of works, including transfer insurance if needed, as well as the retrieval of work at the end of the exhibition. Please do not submit work that have already been sold or are out of the Philadelphia region.

Sale of Work

Art may be for sale. Art in City Hall is not a commercial gallery and does not take commission.  All sales are between the artist and interested patron(s).

Liability

Each accepted artist will receive a loan agreement. Artwork will be insured once received by Art in City Hall and determined to be in good condition for the duration of the exhibition and installation/de-installation periods.

Joyce Kozloff, Cradles to Conquests

Cradles to Conquests at Rowan University Art Gallery, January 21st through March 15th, 2014. Rowan University Art Gallery is located on the lower level of Westby Hall on the university campus, Route 322 in Glassboro, NJ.

GLASSBORO, NJ – Joyce Kozloff, a New Jersey native and a major figure in both the Pattern and Decoration and the Feminist art movements of the 1970s, debuts her solo exhibition in New Jersey at Rowan University Art Gallery. Running from January 21 through March 15, the exhibition is welcomed with a gallery talk by the artist and reception on Wednesday, January 29th at 5:00 pm.

Cradles to Conquests: Mapping American Military History is a selection of Kozloff’s work completed between 2000 and 2010 that reference imagined and historical military events.

The works utilize collage, cartography and mapping as a narrative extension of Joyce’s decorative arts sensibilities and her work as a feminist and anti-war activist.  Ironically, Kozloff’s mapping series makes use of a practice once widely viewed as “gender-specific” —appliqué, weaving, pattern, decorative — to challenge and question the authority of a patriarchal, militaristic culture.

Curated by gallery director Mary Salvante, the works selected for this exhibition focuses directly on maps and imagery that dramatize the emergence of the US through the lens of its military engagements and exploits in the name of expansion and national interests.  The exhibition features several of Kozloff’s iconic pieces such as Targets, a walk in globe that utilizes official tactical pilotage charts in which to depicts all of the US bombing sites around the world since 1945, Boys Art Series, which collages innocent, youthful drawing done by the artist’s son with nautical maps, and Rocking the Cradle, a larger than life size baby cradle with a map of Mesopotamia, the seat of cultivation, and to this day a very sensitive location politically.

Joyce Kozloff began to focus on public art in 1979. She expanded the scale of her installations and the accessibility of her art to reach a wider audience and, since the early 1990s, has been utilizing mapping as a device for expressing her interests in history, culture, politics and the decorative and popular arts. She has had solo exhibitions at the DC Moore Gallery in New York; Trout Gallery at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania; Spazio Thetis in Venice, Italy; and Regina Gouger Miller Gallery of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, National Museum of Women in the Arts, MoMA P.S.1, Vancouver Art Gallery and The Jewish Museum in New York. Recently, her work was included in the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art’s The Map as Art.

 The works included in the exhibition are courtesy of the artist and DC Moore Gallery and several private collectors.
