Featuring almost 50 artists from across the globe and over 100 pieces of original artwork, Small Wonders 2014 includes not only Philly and AEA staples like Paul Romano, Maria Teicher, Air Rat, & Caitlin McCormack, but also 34 artists showing at ARCH ENEMY ARTS for the very first time.

As with both previous installments, all the work will be sized below 12″, and priced at $250 or less. Small Wonders is our only cash-and-carry show of the year, so everyone can walk out of the opening with art in their hands. It’s way cooler than standing in line at 4:00am for a discount flat screen on BlackFriday.

“Tremain Smith‘s major media since the 80’s has been encaustic with mixed media. She was the first artist in my gallery to work with hot wax and has developed many technical innovations over the years. She is inspired by a wide range of spirituality from many times and places. The work is always abstract usually with geometric imagery. The recent work explores the usage of the grid.” – Richard Rosenfeld

“Tremain Smith has four works in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.  Her work is in corporate and private collections across the country.  She has had dozens of solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Scottsdale, Maine, Delaware, Florida and Hawaii.  Group exhibitions include SOFA Chicago, Art Miami, the Painted Bride, the Philadelphia Art Alliance, and the USArtists American Fine Art Show.  Smith was awarded a 3-month artist residency in 2004 at the McColl Center for Visual Art in Charlotte, North Carolina.  She taught encaustic painting at the Penland School of Crafts in 2006 and will be again in 2015, as well as at the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill and R&F Paints in 2014.”

Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid or paste is then applied to a surface—usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are often used. The simplest encaustic mixture can be made from adding pigments to beeswax, but there are several other recipes that can be used—some containing other types of waxes, damar resin, linseed oil, or other ingredients. Pure, powdered pigments can be used, though some mixtures use oil paints or other forms of pigment. – Wikipedia

Rancocas Valley Plein Air Painters Exhibit

The inaugural show, About the Art, Art Gallery Space at 137 High Street, Mount Holly, New Jersey, 08060, November and December, 2014. Jan Terry, curator.

Opening Reception: Saturday November 8th, 2:00 to 4:00pm
Please join us for our first exhibit, About the Art. Meet the artists, enjoy refreshments and get to know our new gallery space! Watch for plein air painters in the area (weather permitting), Saturday December 15th (Second Saturday) from 1:00 to 5:00, light refreshments will be served and a warm environment welcomes you! The area also will be one of the sites for The Battle of Iron Works Hill.

About the Art Gallery Space at 137 High Street will begin hosting art exhibits in
November. Curator, Jan Terry invites artists and art groups to exhibit their work for
shows throughout the year. Each exhibit will run from 60 to 90 days. Receptions will be
held on Second Saturdays as part of Mount Holly’s Second Saturday Arts Crawl. Special
events and classes are being planned and will be announced in the near future.
Artwork will be displayed in the public spaces of the Office Condominiums at 137 High
Street, and in the offices of the Burlington County Bar Association on the third floor. All
the offices in the building are wheelchair accessible. The space is open during regular
business hours and during Mount Holly’s Second Saturday Arts Crawl from 1:00 to 5:00pm.

Starstruck: The Fine Art of Astrophotography opens November 8

(Doylestown, PA) The James A. Michener Art Museum proudly announces a spectacle of galactic proportions entitled Starstruck: The Fine Art of Astrophotography. The exhibition is curated by Anthony Shostak, the Bates College Museum of Art, Lewiston, Maine, and will be on view through February 8, 2015.

Among the first major exhibitions examining astrophotography as an art genre, Starstruck presents a dazzling array of images that gives insight into this rapidly evolving field. The exhibition features stunning images by 34 artists from around the world. The installation features a variety of extraordinary themes, from landscapes and oceans to galaxies, moons and cavernous sky objects.

The exhibition, on loan from the Bates College Museum of Art, was selected by a distinguished team of jurors comprised of Weston Naef, curator emeritus of photography at the J. Paul Getty Museum; Dennis di Cicco, pioneer of CCD astrophotography and senior editor, Sky & Telescope magazine; and Jerry T. Bonnell, co-editor/author NASA‘s Astronomy Picture of the Day. A 242-page color catalog documents the exhibition, illustrating each photograph and featuring essays by the jurors and by Eric Wollman, professor of physics at Bates College.

Anthony Shostak, curator of education for the Bates College Museum of Art, shares that, “…the images in Starstruck are nothing less than overwhelming – depicting humbling, glorious delights that are often invisible to both the naked eye and even the telescope, and are revealed only through photographic means.”

Now a familiar topic in publications like Sky & Telescope and Astronomy magazines, astrophotography is a worldwide phenomenon, illustrating the convergence of art and science as told through the lens of a camera.

Lisa Tremper Hanover, Director & CEO states, “We are delighted to host this exhibition and provide the Museum’s guests with a view of the vastness of our universe through the camera’s lens. The photographs illustrate an array of colors, beauty and mystique of the stars and planets that would not otherwise be visible to the naked eye.”

Starstruck will be complemented by a variety of educational programs including a lecture entitled Inter Stellar Space Travel on November 9; a Curator Gallery Talk on November 9; an Educators Open House on November 13; a lecture entitled The Hubble Outdone? on November 13; and a Hubble Roadshow and Film Screening of Saving Hubble on November 20. Su Knoll Horty Artist Statement

“Just be so good that you cannot be ignored.” Su Knoll Horty uses this quote from Steve Martin as daily inspiration when working on her paintings. Working primarily with oils, using a palette knife to layer on the color, then scraping or rubbing it off. This creates the transparent layer of color and shaped ‘stains’ Su uses to build her color relationships, focusing on the effects that adjoining colors have on one another.Su says, “My challenge as a painter is to create emotion through the use of color. I am inspired by the complexities of color and how color fields create harmonious and often, unexpected dimensions. I explore the ways compositions change through layering and fusing color. Spaces of clarity juxtapose with spaces of intricacy, and vibrancy contrasts with calm.”

Su Knoll Horty‘s latest work explores a simplified landscape space, which often contrasts organic shapes and perspectival elements with simple bands or static rectangles of color. These contrasting elements give an added vibrancy and movement to the already vibrant colors Su uses.

About Bluestone Fine Art Gallery

Established in 2011 by Pam Regan, Bluestone Fine Art Gallery has been operating in the Old City District of Philadelphia on the corner of Second and Quarry streets.
