The Messenger is Already Dead – CFEVA Gallery @ 1521 Locust St.

CFEVA @ 1521 Locust St Philadelphia

Katie Murken @ Center for Emerging Visual Artists Gallery.

Katie Murken

Katie Murken’s contribution to The Messenger is Already Dead includes the Brancusi-esque columns and layered photo collages (a great steal-able idea – it took her three years to think it up, you can have it for free!).  The cool thing about Murken’s work is the logical conclusions – like, “duh?” – why didn’t DoN think of that; a great meme is hard to find, impossible to control.  In the corner are Scott Pellnat‘s “Land of Horror’s 1 – 4, wax and Barbie dolls”.

 Peter Prusinowski

Peter Prusinowski is a master of the dark room, the gelatin silver prints of Fishtown are evocative of the neighborhood’s long established quirkiness and history.  The blacks are rich and deep, the grays iridescent, the framing & lighting excellent so that the narrative readily absorbs into the consciousness with symbols and signs of civilization.

CFEVA @ 1521 Locust St Philadelphia

Scott Pellnat‘s room-sized installation is fantastically inventive and enthralling; created in his North Jersey back yard, the sprawling construction is a dream scape of shipwrecks, collapsed highways, hidden chambers and fools gold.  Like a nightmare, there is no beginning or end, only feedback and feelings; Scott explained to DoN not all the teeny bookcases were filled with itsy-bitsy books as if the piece was still a work in progress.  To get to the gallery push the black button in the elevator and you will be transported to a world of dreams, nightmares and extraordinary reality.

Peter Prusinowski @ Fishtown Airways, 200 East Girard Ave. Prusinowski is a Center for Emerging Visual Artists Fellow, a great honor bestowed on outstanding artists allowing them to exhibit works in group shows, receive publicity, opportunities and support from the Center. Peter is a photography purist who works in a wet dark room and is not interested in digital photography in the least. As he explained to DoN, Peter attempts to emulate masters such as Man Ray who was able to achieve solarization on film which appears like magic in the development process.

Prusinowski’s show at Fishtown Airways focusses on the history of Fishtown and the Penn Treaty, combining historic documents and photographs alongside his own studies of the area. A story of community and it’s importance to the early development of the USA emerges with bucolic river views, charming residences and quirky scenes from the centuries old village inhabited by long time residents and young growing families.

A group of historic documents including old newspaper articles, graphics and papers shed light on the Penn Treaty and the importance of this river town and it’s people.

East Girard Avenue is on the east side of the Frankford El with restaurants, bars, shops and a lively street scene. Fishtown Airways corner is bright and sunny, the gallery painted a buttery yellow, the art pops off the wall against the restful color. Proprietor , Bob Murphy is planning to open an ice cream shop along the broad avenue making this section of Fishtown a family friendly destination as well as an art outpost along with Johnnie Brenda‘s, High Wire and Bambi. Shoshka and DoN had a blast talking with the locals and hanging out on the corner.

CFEVA presents Treasures @ Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, LLP

The Center for Emerging Visual Artists has installed a show called Treasures at the Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP Building @ 1701 Market Street featuring works by Career Development Programs Fellows.  The spacious lobby is displaying works by some of DoN’s favorite CFEVA artists including Scott Pelnat, John Woodin, Ben Volta, Danielle Bursk, Brenna K. Murphy and many more – the works are of a smaller scale and affordably priced.  The art party was well attended and some of the works sold while the wine flowed and patrons nibbled the tasty buffet. DoN spoke with Amy Potsic about how CFEVA installs “Custom Exhibitions” in public spaces where the art and artists can be exposed to the world at large instead of the confines of a gallery.  For more than three years this important organization has placed works in offices, lobbies and corporate spaces where potential collectors can view art in their own environment, often resulting in sales for the artists.
