Me

All of a sudden my artwork is everywhere! Today is the artist reception for Home Fine Art and Framing Gallery at 2 Church Street, Mount Holly, NJ 08060 (609) 261-8634. I was invited by the irrepressible Ben Cohen and proprietor Kathryn Spear to be a guest artist. I have three photographic prints and a digital print of QR codes that links to websites, animated gif and videos.

Thanks to Pauline Jonas and Jeff Stroud my photography is included in the Photographic Society of Philadelphia group show at Galleria Deptford, 1011 Cooper Street, Deptford NJ. Read my review of the show on DoNArTNeWs here.

The Plastic Club small WORLDS 2014 show includes a basket of five one sheet books. Three of the books were originally included in the 110 Church Gallery RiTUAL Reading Room show. Read my review of the show here. I created two more books including a tribute to my beautiful Lady Doofus, the St. Bernard/Chihuahua who passed away almost two years ago, I was inspired to write the story because kids in my neighborhood still ask where Beethoven is which makes me very happy.Photo by Morris Klein at small WORLDS 2014 at The Plastic Club

“Linda Hollinger traded her paints and brushes for film and the camera. Her images include a wide range of subject matter, sports, nature and landscape. However, she is drawn to strong faces with a story to tell. Her passion is to travel the world and capture everyday people absorbed in their daily lives. Most rewarding for her is freezing that moment in time capturing life’s moments through the lens.

We are excited to have Linda release her collection of over 50 images for the first time at the Hansen Warner Gallery here in Medford. Individual images from this collection have already won numerous local and international awards over the past year including the Best of Show in the 41st Robert Ransley Juried Art Exhibit, and both Gold and Silver in the DVCCC Photo Travel international competition sponsored by the Photographic Society of America. She was also published in the June 2013, PSA Journal for Picture of the Month.”

The Levoy Theatre, a Vision for Millville

The Levoy Theatre‘s renovation took many years and was finally accomplished in 2012. The story of how the town of Millville New Jersey brought this theater back to prominence after years of neglect involves the heroic efforts of dedicated citizens, theater people, artists, and public officials. It is a story that may inspire other American towns struggling with a poor economy. The Levoy Theatre sends out the message that art can indeed make life better, for individuals as well as communities. – John Thornton

“The story of the Levoy is the story of the people who built it, owned it, worked in it and patronized it. It is a story filled with triumph and defeat, happiness and sadness. It is exactly the story you might expect from an historic icon that’s commanded Millville’s High Street for over a century.

The first Levoy Theatre filled a ten year void left in Millville after the 1898 fire that destroyed the Wilson Opera House (once at High and Sassafras Sts.), Millville’s largest theatre of the 19th century. By 1908 Millville needed a new source of entertainment, and William “Pop” Somers of Atlantic City and Somers Point fame came to Millville seeing the opportunity for his Levoy.” – The Levoy Theatre website

Artists explore the internal contradictions, hidden meaning, and implicit ideologies of language Glassboro NJ: Rowan University Art Gallery presents Dialogic a multi-media group exhibition of work by artists that explore the internal contradictions, hidden meaning and implicit ideologies of language as a critical component of their practice from September 3 through October 8 – 8 pm followed by a spoken word event at 8:30 pm. Both events are free and open to the public.

Curated by Gallery Director, Mary Salvante, the exhibition includes work by Jenny Holzer, Glenn Ligon, Jaume Plensa, Lesley Dill, John Giorno, Keith Brand, Erik den Breejen, DataSpaceTime, Bang Geul Han, Barbara Hashimoto, Meg Hitchcock, Dawn Kramlich, Melanie McLain, Ben Pranger, Buy Shaver, Chris Vecchio and Sue White. How language is perceived, communicated, and translated is informed by the visual qualities and symbolic power of the texts, words, and poetic phrasings incorporated into the video, sound-scapes, interactive tech-works, sculpture, paintings and works on paper included in this exhibition.

Works by Jenny Holzer, Glenn Ligon, Buy Shaver, and Dawn Kramlich reproduce text as aphorisms, precepts, and dictums to influence the thoughts and actions of the viewer. John Giorno’s ground breaking Dial-A-Poem project, Keith Brand’s exterior soundscape, Melanie McLain’s performative video, DataSpaceTime’s QR code mural, Bang Geul Han’s motion activated video and Chris Vecchio‘s public art action and interactive works focus on the physical and aural complexities of language. The sculpture, paintings, works on paper, and installations by Lesley Dill, Jaume Plensa, Barbara Hashimoto, Meg Hitchcock, Erik den Breejen, Ben Pranger and Sue White deconstruct and recontextualize language through reimagining systems of communication found in advertisements, books, braille, poetry, Morse code and scripture.

Admission to the gallery is free and open to the public. Regular gallery hours are Monday – Friday, 10 am to 5 pm (with extended hours on Wednesdays to 7 pm); and Saturday, 12 to 5 pm. Ivy Chaya Art Studios and Gallery, 106 East Pine Street, Millville NJ

DoN asked how new gallery owner Ivy Chaya plans to participate in the vibrant Millville art scene?

“We’ve been here since September 2012, so this will be our first Spring and Summer here. Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts has the Ace Kids, we want to offer some private lessons as well as workshops, too. We’re going to try and incorporate a lot of kids activities. Especially with the Flower Festival, that’s going to have a lot of kids involved in it, too.”

DoN asked why Millville?

“We’re looking forward to the nice weather, longer days and more business visitors. I’ve always heard that it’s a cool art scene but I met it in person, right before we moved in, and experienced Third Friday, and fell in love with it. Eddie had lived here before, he took me on a tour, then we saw an ad for a live/work space and we jumped on it. It’s been an amazing learning experience.

The community is great. Open arms, you know, what can we do to help? And we just got involved with so many things so quickly. And it wasn’t hard to do, there’s great communication and the word of mouth network, and everyone’s really motivated and wants to participate.”

Ivy Chaya has a good support system and she took the long, slow Winter months to prepare her business for the future. There are some big changes coming to High Street.

“Yeah, Cumberland County College is going to start building, using empty buildings and creating an amazing center with gallery space, office space and that kind of thing. That should bring the younger crowd, the college students to be here.”

April showers bring May flowers and at Ivy Chaya Art Studios and Gallery is an abundance of floral paintings framed with reclaimed fencing blown down by Super-storm Sandy.
