David Gerbstadt has been in my circle of influence for many years through the Philadelphia Dumpster Divers, the disabled artists scene and Philadelphia art galleries. Often people will ask me how to sell their art and I refer them to David’s facebook page to see how he gently pokes and prods people to buy his products. David has a way of asking for the sale that would make any sales manager proud. He offers a variety of products, he will do commissions, he up-cycles found objects, he makes gifts for kids and grownups and offers a variety of payment options. David Gerbstadt is an award-winning, prolific fine artist and author of One Breath At a Time. He’s handsome, funny, friendly and highly creative. And he died.

David was riding his bike one day and was run over by a tractor trailer truck and on the way to the hospital he flat-lined. Thank dog he was revived but he is haunted by PTSD nightmares and daytime memories that stop him in his tracks as the thoughts of being dragged under the truck invade his life. These intrusive memories don’t stop him from pursuing his art career and you would never know from his kid-friendly, optimistic artwork that he suffers almost everyday from the traumatic event that changed his life forever.

Noel the tripod dog changed his life, too, when he adopted her a few years ago and became his constant companion. The metaphor of Noel’s survival is sweet and sublime and offers us all hope that we can overcome adversity. David struggles to meet his expenses as you might well imagine. Let’s face it, even able bodied artists have a hard time making a living. But David is optimistic and every once in a while he will ask for help to meet his expenses through special offers and art sales.

buy someone a slice who is in need. they put up a post its in place.
over 8,000 slices given away so far.

i am working on a similar idea. I am asking people to mail a check for $1 to my mortgage co.
if it can work for pizza and coffee – why not for mortgages — i posted on facebook and many people think it’s a great idea.

PHS Flower Show Wins Top International Prize

‘ARTiculture’ earns record 17 awards from IFEA

PHILADELPHIA (September 2014) – The PHS Philadelphia Flower Show received 17 international awards for excellence for the 2014 presentation, “ARTiculture” – including the top prize, the Grand Pinnacle Gold Award — at ceremonies held Sept. 29 in Kansas City, Mo. The honors included five Gold Awards, five Silver, and seven Bronze Awards in the International Festival & Events Association competition.

This was the greatest number of prizes ever received by the PHS Philadelphia Flower Show in the IFEA contest, which includes entries from the Kentucky Derby Festival, Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade, Indianapolis 500 Festival, National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C., City of Dublin Irish Festival, Edmonton Heritage Festival, Ludwig Von Beethoven Festival in Krakow, Rotterdam Festivals; and the World Gourmet Summit in Singapore.

The Flower Show was recognized in a variety of presentation, programming and promotional categories. The prizes included Gold Awards for the show’s Entrance Garden, community outreach program, green practices at the event, and show merchandise.

The winners were announced at the IFEA/Haas & Wilkerson Pinnacle Awards Ceremony held during the association’s 59th annual convention and expo. The awards for the Flower Show were earned in the following categories:

The PHS Philadelphia Flower Show provides inspirational and informative displays, educational presentations, and entertainment. The 2014 Flower Show attracted 230,000 visitors from around the world.

Tickets are now on sale for the 2015 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show, which will celebrate the movies on February 28 to March 8 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center… It’s “Lights, Camera, BLOOM.”

Social practice is a theory within psychology that seeks to determine the link between practice and context within social situations. Emphasized as a commitment to change, social practice occurs in two forms: activity and inquiry. Most often applied within the context of human development, social practice involves knowledge production and the theorization and analysis of both institutional and intervention practices.” – Wikipedia

An artist friend of mine asked, “You’re really into this ice bucket challenge thing. Aren’t you?” Yeah, I am. In June I learned that a friend from college was diagnosed with ALS. Jay Smith is young, smart, creative with a successful business and a beautiful family, the news was unbelievable and incredibly sad. Have you ever wept so hard tears literally shoot out of your eyes? The feeling of helplessness, the unfairness of the diagnosis, the mystery of what had happened was shocking, stultifying and confusing. There is no known cause for ALS and no treatment. Jay needed a miracle.

Then, something miraculous happened. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge became a social media phenomenon like nothing else before. Within a few weeks people all over the world became aware of this insidious disease through social media platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter with silly, wacky and funny videos of people dumping a bucket of ice water over their heads, donating money and challenging their friends to do the same. The modern miracle of the internet and social media has raised awareness and money to unprecedented levels not since Lou Gehrig, the baseball heart throb, was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in 1939.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is one of the biggest Social Practice art projects the world has ever known. And like other art movements there are enthusiastic early adopters and those who doubt the authenticity of the art form. Even when some of the greatest minds on the planet opt in to dump ice water on their heads and gasp, there are some who are annoyed by the pervasiveness of the project and choose to throw a wet blanket on the idea.

Imagine if you as an artist create an art project that is so successful, so pervasive, so entertaining and popular that critics will pounce on it with lies, fear and distrust from out of nowhere? The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is like the Jeff Koons of Social Practice art, either you love him and get it or you don’t. Either you delighted in the expressions of support or you doubted. I was kind of shocked when the signs of social media fatigue started to set in, the first complaint I noticed was a popular Philly DJ who’s voice reaches far and wide on the radio and internet. I tried to explain to him that dumping ice water on your head is a metaphor for living with the disease that literally takes your breath away. He decided to double down on his gripe and said he had already donated and was tired of the videos in his facebook newsfeed, with a smily face emogi 🙂

Facebook rage and rants, charity envy, misleading info-graphics, religious interference and science deniers have emerged from the social media troll layer like crazed zombies eating brains. From Pam Anderson placing the life of the poor little mice, worms and fruit flies used in efficacy testing over the lives of suffering humans to supposedly charitable institutions like churches spreading lies about stem cell research the disinformation being spread is stunningly ignorant. I can only imagine the rage in the minds of people trapped inside a non-responsive body while adrenaline surges though their brains listening to uninformed, narcissistic boneheads blabber and mouth off. I’m talking about you Bill Maher. But many ALS patients can’t speak for themselves and their advocates and caregivers don’t have time for this shit from the haters because they are too busy caring for their loved ones.

Now is a time when art, creativity, performance, science and technology have shined a light on what is hard to look at and not shy away. The ugly/beautiful Social Practice art movement called The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is challenging the people of our world to open their eyes to a very difficult sight to see. Some are wondering what the next gimmick, meme, trick, game or challenge will be? Maybe a cure for cancer, heart disease, autoimmune diseases, autism, Alzheimer’s…? Through Social Practice art we can make real miracles happen in the real world. Suck it ALS!

Budweiser Made in America Festival, Labor Day Weekend, August 30th & 31st, Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia.

Again this year Philly will be the backdrop for the Budweiser’s Made In America FestivalLast year I watched from the comfort of my home as the show live streamed on YouTube with my speakers turned all the way up. The line up of artists mixed genres from pop to rap to rock and back, with multiple stages featuring famous DJs, new bands, established acts and celebrities.

The Budweiser’s Made In America Festival 2013 show closed with Nine Inch Nails presenting a fabulous multi-media extravaganza, I felt so proud of Philly to be the nexus of pop culture, music and style. The weekend of music showcased the diversity of Philadelphia’s people as they partied, cheered and sang along showing the world why Philly is so cool. After all Philly has the best dancers – always has, always will. I can only imagine what Kanye West will show to the world with the Philadelphia Museum of Art in the background.

Kanye West is an artist that I admire and respect and I’m sure he will recognize the significance of the venue and the opportunity to present his artistic style in fashion, music and technology as a multi-media master. Kanye West has become more than an artist, he has become a pop culture meme with so many fractals of narrative that the idea of Kanye is something different for everybody everywhere. Known primarily as a rapper he collaborates with others to create an experience design that encompasses music, poetry, narrative, message, image, communications and design. From Takashi Murakami‘s cover art for Graduation to wearing the Maison Martin Margiela crystal mask he premiered at his performance at Revel Casino collaborating with Kanye makes the famous even more famous. Visual art is the central theme of Kanye West‘s style recognizing that contemporary audiences see as well as hear music like a kind of synesthesia stimulating multiple senses simultaneously.

Kanye’s presence on Ben Franklin Parkway itself is a work of art, one of the most famous artists on the planet will be within walking distance of my house and seen by millions, maybe billions of people, around the world. Isn’t that the goal of all artists? To be famous in their lifetime, to influence trends and style, to live lavishly and create art so brilliant, so distinct and different it will be remembered forever. Social Media Salon

The Plastic Club, an artist’s club, studio and gallery, in Center City Philadelphia holds regular art salons to discuss art, critique each others work and learn new techniques. DoN was invited to give a presentation about Social Media and how artists can start using various on-line platforms to promote their art. We began the two hour discussion with the basics of social interactions:

Elevator Pitch

An elevator pitch is a short, succinct description of you and your business. For example: “My name is DoN Brewer, I write an art blog called DoNArTNeWs about the Philadelphia art scene with photographs and art reviews, artist interviews and how-to reports. DoNArTNeWs is based on multiple on-line platforms and has reached over 750 thousand unique visitors this year.”

How would you describe your art and successes if you had someone’s undivided attention for one minute? By preparing your pitch in advance and practicing in the mirror or with friends you can be ready when the opportunity to introduce yourself arises. Put a smile on your face, make eye contact, shake hands and make a pitch that is fact filled and to the point.

Business Cards

I always carry business cards in my wallet, pocket or camera bag and give them away freely. Cards are inexpensive and a great way to make a lasting impression – but make sure it’s a good one. Overly colorful, shiny or too small fonts can get your card lost in the shuffle. Try to limit your palette to three colors, include important contact information and resist the urge to make both sides of the card glossy. Shiny cards are pretty but they are difficult to write on if the person your presenting the card to wants to jot down notes. An interesting logo, large fonts, nice card stock and simple colors makes a strong impression. I use www.overnightprints.com for my cards, they offer low prices and guarantee satisfaction. I’d Rather Be in the Studio: The Artist’s No-Excuse Guide to Self-Promotion

This how-to book by author Alyson Stanfield will teach you how to promote your art in the marketplace. DoNArTNeWs followed the tips in this easy to read, fact filled book and the step-by-step advice really works! Starting first as a newsletter and now as a multi-platform blog (an on-line magazine), DoNArTNeWs has reached millions of art enthusiasts since 2008. I’d Rather be in the Studio can help you develop a marketing strategy, create a database of clients, build confidence and promote a positive image.

Another book that I found very inspiring is Julia Cameron’s, The Artist’s Way Starter Kit. My biggest take-away from this popular book is making an ‘art date’ with myself. An art date means going out to visit other artists, art galleries and museums on a regular basis – even if I have to go alone. Visiting art galleries doesn’t have to be a team sport; if you can’t find friends to go with you, go by yourself and don’t stand yourself up. Committing to keeping a date with yourself is not just an exercise in seeing new art, it promotes self-reliance and confidence.

Website Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine‘s “natural” or un-paid (“organic“) search results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users. (Wikipedia) Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is vital to having your artist website appear at the top of search engine websites such as Google. If you don’t understand HTML, then find someone who does and make sure that the important ‘meta-tags’ are complete and accurate. Having your name is important in the title but what you do is more so. Are you an abstract expressionist? Do you paint portraits? Is watercolor landscapes your specialty? This information should be included in the ‘Title Tag’ with the first nine words of the title being the most important terms relating to your business. The title information appears in the bar at the top of your web browser window; if your website says “Home’ or “Index’ and does not show your name and business description then you will never show up in a web search.

Other important meta-tags are ‘Name’, ‘Copyright’, ‘Description’ and ‘Key Words’. By filling in the blanks with the terms most important to your business your website will appear high in search engines. Make sure everything is spelled correctly and avoid small words like ‘is’, ‘a’, ‘the’, ‘and’, ‘it’…use only important search terms. The grammar doesn’t have to make sense in the title as long as it includes the words that people may use to search for someone like you.

Blogging

A blog is a personal website or web page on which an individual records opinions, links to other sites, etc. on a regular basis. OK, let’s be frank. Blogging is easy but it takes time to learn. DoNArTNeWs is based on a WordPress platform which offers many benefits. You are looking at a website with the domain name of www.brewermultimedia.com hosted by www.1and1.com with a blog called DoNArTNeWs based on a template called Twenty-Twelve. There are zillions of templates to choose from, I like Twenty-Twelve because I can customize the header with my own logo image. Free blogs are available directly through WordPress but then their name will be part of you blog URL. You can also pay WordPress for a domain name.

The most important thing is creating good content. I attend art events and take photographs, interview artists or gallery owners on my smart phone and then try to write the post in a timely manner. Since I know Photoshop, I resize the photo to fit the width of the column and change it to a .gif which reduces the size of the image allowing it to load faster. Images can also be adjusted in WordPress, there are tutorials on-line and support forums. Images are uploaded to a ‘Media File’ and have titles, alt tags and descriptions that should be completed as fully as possible – always mention your own name in the description since it is relevant to search engines.

I use the recorded interview either as a way to compose my own review of the art or to share the conversation by transcribing into text. Important terms are highlighted with a link – the link button looks like a little chain on the toolbar at the top of the page you compose the blog post on. Links should usually direct to a new window so visitors don’t click off of your page.

The blog post is linked to categories relevant to the content such as art, painting, prints, etc and important keywords are noted as tags. I link to as many categories as possible, link the post to other posts I’ve written and copy-and-paste links each time the information is repeated.

Tumblr is a free and easy way to start a blog and reach a wide audience. The simplified dashboard and variety of templates let’s you be as creative as you want or just keep it simple. You can upload your own images, link from your website or share images from other blogs. Content can be text with links as well. Tumblr is very popular with artists and is a good way to share your ideas and see what other artists are creating

Facebook and Twitter

Facebook fan page is a public profile on Facebook for use by businesses, celebrities, etc. that allows your customers to follow you, and interact with you. A Facebook fan page is a way to advertise your art to people who are interested in what you’re about. Fan pages are easy to set up in a category relevant to what you do. The tag line is a great place to use your elevator pitch terms, a good header image and profile picture offers a quick insight into your business. When I write a blog post I click the title of the blog, copy the url and paste it into a status, write a short description and add hash tags (#tags). The link will bring up an image from the blog or you can upload a different image. Hash tags are links to topics. For example when I write a post I will add #art #Philadelphia #photography #artist etc. Also adding a link to your status by using the ‘@’ followed by your page name sets an additional link back to your page and highlights it on your fan’s newsfeed.

Build an audience by inviting your friends to ‘like’ the page, add links back to your Facebook page and Twitter handle. Twitter is an online social networking and microblogging service that enables users to send and read “tweets”, which are text messages limited to 140 characters. Registered users can read and post tweets but unregistered users can only read them. Users access Twitter through the website interface, SMS, or mobile device app. (Wikipedia) Twitter is a great way to reach a large targeted audience. You can communicate directly with people using short messages or link back to your blog and Facebook posts.

A good way to organize and automate your social media is through Hootsuite which enables a ‘tweet’ to automatically be sent when you post a status on your Facebook fan page. Following others on Facebook and Twitter, liking, sharing and adding comments will help build your audience. Hootsuite is a social media management system for brand management created by Ryan Holmes in 2008. The system’s user interface takes the form of a dashboard, and supports social network integrations for Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, Foursquare, MySpace, WordPress…and more.

Instagram

Instagram is an online photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos, apply digital filters to them, and share them on a variety of social networking services, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Flickr. Instagram is a smart phone camera app that can be set up to post to your Facebook fan page, send a Tweet and post to your Tumblr blog automatically. More than just a picture, it’s a way to share links and hash tags instantly.

PayPal

PayPal is a global e-commerce business allowing payments and money transfers to be made through the Internet. PayPal offers merchant services such as ‘buy buttons’ that can easily be embedded in your blog by copying and pasting the code into your post.

This is actually the bottom line of this tutorial. By using your website, a blog, Facebook and Twitter, Tumblr and Instgram you can let your fans know when you’re having an event, what’s new, what’s for sale and how to buy your art.

People ask me how much time I put into writing and posting? I do some or all of the above almost everyday. By sharing stories and pictures, linking to important information, leading fans to my sites with tweets and Facebook status updates I am able to maximize traffic to my website and blogs.

There are many other ways to promote your art on-line such as ebay, Etsy, redbubble, Saatchi Online and many, many more. It only takes time and research to learn how to use these tools to promote and sell your art.
