Coalition Ingenu Farewell Party and Relocation Fundraiser

As we near the final months of our 18 year history in Philadelphia, we cordially invite you to attend  a very special event at a very special place — the gated property surrounding the oldest standing residence in Philadelphia: The historic Thomas Wynne estate known as Wynnestay.

Live music, hot and cold buffet, beer and wine bar, silent auction and prize all on the grounds of the spacious and historic Wynnestay estate, 2335 North 52nd Street, Philadelphia PA, 19131.

Saturday October 19th, 2013, 1:00 – 5:00pm, $20.00 in advance, $25.00 at the gate.

Advance purchases of these reasonably priced tickets are important for attendance at our farewell party and relocation fundraiser, because we need to know how many to prepare for. Coalition Ingenu Self Taught Artist’s Collection Dispersal Sale.

A comprehensive collection of outsider, visionary, folk and naive art accumulated over the 18 year history of the Coalition Ingenu Self-Taught Artists’ Collective of Philadelphia.

Coalition Ingenu is a nonprofit organization promoting artwork by self-taught creative individuals with histories of homelessness,unique mental conditions, or other extraordinary circumstances precluding them from equal opportunity or ability to promote themselves.

Founded in 1995, Coalition Ingenu has presented over 100 exhibits, displayed over 6000 works of art representing well over 200 self-taught artists, and worked with more than 45 hospitals and nonprofits from West Chester, PA to Haddonfield, NJ. Many of the artists have sold artwork to private and corporate collectors, and selected work and/or articles about the collective have appeared on calendars, greeting cards, catalogs, murals, CD covers, newspapers, magazines, numerous web sites, and books.

It has long been recognized that art making is a valuable therapeutic activity, allowing the artists opportunities to heal emotional wounds through self-expression, develop social skills and self-confidence, and build positive work habits. At the very least, negative thoughts and feelings are often suspended during the creative process. But genuine self-esteem seems to involve finding places to “belong” and ways to contribute to others.

“To anyone who doesn’t know this yet, Susan and I (and our dog) will be moving to Florida in December of 2013. Our non-profit, the Coalition Ingenu (Self-taught Artists’ Collective) will be relocating as well. Our final Philadelphia exhibit will be at Isaiah Zagar’s Magic Gardens from Oct. 4 – Nov. 17, 2013.

Over the past 18 years, Coalition Ingenu has hosted or presented over 180 exhibits of art by self-taught artists in and around the Philadelphia area — and as far away as upstate NY, Pittsburgh PA, Washington DC and Durham NC. We are deeply grateful to all of our supporters and patrons, and could not have achieved nearly as much without your generosity. It is sad to leave a City that has meant so much to us, and to say good-bye to all of those wonderful people with whom we have connected through our mission — but, as we feel the need to be closer to my parents (Joseph and Dorine Bullock) as they approach the ninth decade of their lives, we also hope that central Florida’s more rural environment will provide us many opportunities to help self-taught artists with histories of extraordinary life circumstances and limited resources with which to promote themselves.” – Robert Bullock

Photographic Exhibition opens at Philadelphia Public Library: Sacred to the Memory – The Historic Cemeteries of Philadelphia

Sept. 9 – Nov. 1, 2013, Free Library of Philadelphia, Parkway Central Library, 1901 Vine Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103-1189

OPENING RECEPTION: Monday, September 16, 2013, from 6 – 9 pm

Sacred to the Memory catches three Philadelphia cemeteries at a moment in time – 2013, more than a hundred and fifty years after they were established. Frank Rausch, Robert Reinhardt, and Ed Snyder are photographers who share a passion for documenting these historic and beautiful sites – Laurel Hill, Woodlands, and Mount Moriah cemeteries. Each site has its own personality and architectural features, each photographer his own unique style. Together they provide a complete visual diary of their visits and adventures in these Victorian sculpture gardens.

The artists will host an Opening Reception in the Library’s exhibit hall, first floor of the Philadelphia Central Library, off main lobby, on September 16, 2013, 6:00 – 8:00pm. On display will be over sixty images as well as artifacts from each of the three historic cemeteries. Representatives from Laurel Hill, Woodlands, and Mount Moriah cemeteries will be in attendance.

A limited edition poster is available, with a percentage of proceeds donated to the non-profit Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery, Inc. The poster can be purchased by contacting Ed Snyder. Autographed copies of the poster and book will be offered for sale during the Opening Reception.

Larry West, Music, Sex & ReligionTHE ART SHOW TOO FRINGEY FOR A FESTIVAL!

Philadelphia artist Larry West is pleased to announce his latest show, “Music, Sex, & Religion” at the intimate InFusion Cafe in the Mt. Airy neighborhood featuring Heavy Metal-inspired Pop-Art. Larry West is a locally-known artist and illustrator who has worked with horror rock band Wednesday 13 and did design work for the Ron Paul for President campaign. InFusion Cafe has chosen to show his work for the month of September 2013.

Larry West‘s show consists of his gig poster designers, concert photos, and other pieces related to music, sexuality, and religion. The show focuses of showing how all three are interconnected in ways that enrich the human experience, and inspires some of the greatest achievements possible. The show runs from September 3rd to September 30th, with an opening reception on September 13th, 2013, from 5pm to 7pm.

Living in Philadelphia his entire art, Larry West has enjoyed doing First Friday events in Old City and creating work for various bands and political figures. “I’ve always enjoyed metal music, and for this show I wanted to focus on what it means to me as both an artist and fan.

InFusion Cafe has hosted various art show over the years, but nothing like the pop-art and politically-charged artwork created by Larry West. Located at 7133 Germantown Avenue in the Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia, InFusion Cafe is a coffee shop and cafe that allows for artists to put on display some of the best contemporary art around while guests enjoy Fair Trade and local coffee’s. The shop is open from 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm on Saturday, and 8am to 4pm on Sunday’s.

Erin McGee Ferrell Bio 2013

After two decades of creating large oil paintings in the public, Erin McGee Ferrell decided to bring her Painting En Plein Air to the world audience via social networking. To date she has created 12 videos capturing painting on the streets of Philadelphia and South Jersey. Not only does she stand with a 4 x 5 foot hand stretched canvas in a tourist populated Philadelphia location, but also she wears ball gowns while doing this. Her painting process has evolved into performance art connecting Philadelphia tourists to the icons within the city. People around the world can watch her paint the City Hall Occupy Philly movement or the Philadelphia Art Museum from the base of the steps. She loves combining her classically rendered oil paintings with new technology and large audiences available through the web.

Erin McGee Ferrell Artist Statement 2013

My paintings are not created behind closed doors. They are created on the streets of Philadelphia and in the woods of New England. I invite you to watch me work as I stand my easel on the Ben Franklin Bridge, the Art Museum steps, and on the sidewalks of the Italian Market. Come explore the coast of Maine and the woods of New Hampshire with my easel and me. The adventure and process of creating the art is as exciting as the product. Look for me in the crowded markets, the tourists’ destinations, and famous landmarks. While my adrenaline pumps, large colorful oils on canvas are created in these people and scenery rich places. I take time-lapse photos of my canvases while I paint. Then I create videos, which are posted on Social Networks linking the subject of my art to the place it was created, and the way I depicted it. This brings my process as an artist to a world audience; virtually traveling to the Philadelphia/ Portland area and experiencing what it is like to be with my painting on the streets.

Sharing my painting process with the public is a gift, not so much for the outcome, but for the vulnerability of the process. You bore witness to my endeavor. Together we shared in the very public awareness of a private interpretation. I created a moment of pause and wonder in the business of the mundane.
