Harmony of the Whole: 7th Exhibition of the Philadelphia Arts Connection at Da Vinci Art AllianceHarmony of the Whole: 7th Exhibition of the Philadelphia Arts Connection at Da Vinci Art Alliance

October, 2014, “Harmony of the Whole: the 7th Exhibition of the Philadelphia Arts Connection,” will open at the gallery of Da Vinci Art Alliance, located at 704 Catharine Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147(phone: 215-829-0466; gallery hours: Wednesdays, 5:00-7:00p.m., Saturdays and Sundays, 12:00-5:00p.m.). The show will feature paintings and sculptures by the Philadelphia Arts Connection [PAC] members and continue until October 26th. The artists’ receptions will be held between 12:00-6:00 p.m. on both October 25th and 26th, coinciding with the POST exhibitions in Philly.

Philadelphia Arts Connection was established in 2010 by a group of Korean émigré artists residing in the greater Philadelphia-New York region. It is a Korean-American artists’ cooperative that meets monthly to provide mutual support and to encourage its members’ artistic growths. In addition, through semiannual group shows, the group strives to promote its members’ visibility to the larger art audiences in the New York-Philadelphia corridor. This is the group’s third show hosted by Da Vinci Art Alliance.

Among the participants in this show are Sung Hoon Ham, Kyungja O. Kim, Soo Arm Ahn, Yeonmi Ahn, Alice Chung, Yeoun Lee, Cara Stickler, Jamie Moon, Samuel Park, Soyoun Kim and Nam Sook Kwon. They work in a variety of media, including oil, watercolor, acrylic, mixed media and sculpture. The exhibition, “Harmony of the Whole,” draws from the unique voices, memories, and reflections of the PAC members whose works embrace both Korean and Western art traditions and incorporate their life experiences and exposures to contemporary arts in America.

For further information on the Philadelphia Arts Connection and its shows, visit www.philaartsconnection.org or send an email to: info@philaartsconnection.org.  You may also contact Sung Hoon Ham at (610) 931-1081 and Yeoun Lee at (856)316-8527 for more information on the show.

In Reverse

Terri Fridkin, MUSE GalleryMy Better Half, monoprint by Terri FridkinMUSE Gallery

“Local printmaker Terri Fridkin will be having her first solo show entitled In Reverse at MUSE Gallery, 52 N. 2nd Street in Old City Philadelphia from October 1 through November 2, 2014. The public is invited to a First Friday Reception on October 3, 5- 7 PM and an Artist’s Reception on Saturday, October 18, 3- 5 PM.  She will also be participating in POST, Philadelphia Open Studio Tour on Saturday and Sunday, October 25 and 26, from noon until 5 PM.

Terri Fridkin is a National Honor Society Graduate of Drexel University Nesbitt College of Design Arts. She worked in the industry for many years and took classes in different media, finally finding herself in a printmaking class. This fueled her lifelong passion for art so she left work to devote more time to fulfill this dream, studying printmaking at various studios and art centers in Pennsylvania and New York.

Since exhibiting her work in 2012, Terri Fridkin has been in numerous invitational and juried shows. Selected exhibitions include Woodmere Art Museum, The State Museum of Pennsylvania, City Hall in Philadelphia, Widener University and various art centers and diverse venues in the tristate area. Terri is a member of MUSE Gallery, The American Color Print Society, and The Cheltenham Guild of Printmakers. Her work is in private collections in New York and Pennsylvania.

Her design background and years of meticulous and precise renderings have influenced her current work. Structure, pattern, line, and color, are the underpinnings of her prints. They provide discipline and a comforting sense of order to counteract the uncertainty and chaos that exists in our world today.

Terri Fridkin’s fascination with printmaking is influenced by the fusion of techniques along with the spontaneous and intuitive creative process. Each hand-pulled layer is formed by the previous one, which dictates the next, as the composition develops a strong graphic imagery. This is achieved by using multiple plates and matrices with transparent and opaque layers of soy-based inks, her medium of choice, along with water based inks, and acrylics. Experimentation, invention, and discovery are the driving forces that inspire her.”

Out of Hand

Out of Hand, Gina Michaels at iMPeRFeCT Gallery

Blue Fingers, bronze, 22 x 17 x 14″, Rushen (detail), bronze, 20 x 13 x 10″

Out of HandGina Michaels’ solo show at iMPeRFeCT Gallery

October 12 – November 2, 2013, Artist’s Reception Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013 5:00-8:00pm

From the beginning, Gina Michaels sculpture is Out of Hand. Her sculpture practice starts in a sandbox. She presses her hands (and feet) into casting sand, sculpting directly in the mold. She then ladles molten bronze directly into the hollows created by the body. The resulting forms are welded into “Hand Plants,” at once animal, vegetable and mineral. They can be read as lovingly cultivated hybrids, or as random and disturbing mutations. The work is full of visual puns and double entendres, with a dose of slapstick. Sometimes modeled figures perch in trees that grow out of the palm of a hand, adding a narrative, mythic dimension. The work can be as small as a few inches high, or eight feet tall. In addition to creating sculpture, Michaels makes nature prints, which will also be on view.

Gina Michaels work will be at iMPeRFeCT Gallery in Germantown from October 12 – November 2. There will be an artist’s reception on Saturday October 12, 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. iMPeRFeCT Gallery is a not-for-profit alternative art space that is both international and community based. Founders Renny Molenaar and Rocio Cabello bring their experience running alternative spaces in New York, contributing a new voice to the Philadelphia art community.

Gina Michaels artwork has been featured in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States, including Paula Barr Chelsea Gallery, Ceres Gallery, and the Prince Street Gallery in New York City; Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey; the Woodmere Art Museum, City Hall, Fairmount Park and Projects Gallery in Philadelphia; and the El Paso in Palm Desert, California. Additional information about the artist and her work can be found at www.ginamichaels.com.
