Philadelphia Sketch Club 154th Annual Small Oils Show

Call for Entry: This is an open, juried competition for paintings where the principal medium is oil paint, acrylic, casein, tempera or other mediums used to represent oil painting. This is not a works on paper or water medium exhibition, although oil on paper is acceptable. Maximum size for any one dimension is 20″ (excluding frame). Paintings must be framed unless framing is not intended for the work. All items must be wired for hanging (no hooks, brackets or holes). Work must be original and not previously shown at the PSC. All paintings must be for sale.

Submissions: You can submit up to 10 works. Maximum Accepted Works Per Artist is 2.

Entry Fee: PSC Members: $1 entry for first piece, $10 each additional work. Non-Members: $20 for first piece, $10 for each additional work.

Online Entry Assistance: Saturday, March 18, 1:00 – 5:00pm at The Philadelphia Sketch Club. Bring your work and we will put it online.

The Gallery at FRONT STREET presents Brazilian Reverie, a solo exhibition featuring photographer and installation artist Amie Potsic.  Her large-scale photographs of Brazilian festival flags conjure the colorful public celebrations in a country of nationalism, economic disparity, and reverie.

The reception will be in the second floor gallery with artisanal cheeses and wine from the chef’s selection.

“Front Street Cafe Philadelphia is a unique full service neighborhood Cafe open for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. The Cafe offers residents of Fishtown and surrounding neighborhoods a friendly atmosphere and fresh menu featuring farm-to-table, locally sourced and organic New American cuisine with international influences. “Amie Potsic is a photographer and installation artist based on the Philadelphia area whose work addresses cultural, personal, and natural phenomena through the lens of social responsibility. With 19 solo exhibitions and over 100 group exhibitions, Potsic has exhibited her work internationally at the Art Park in Rhodes, Greece; The Royal College of London, England; Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá, Colombia; Medfoundart di Cagliari, Italy; the Museum of New Art in Detroit; The Woodmere Art Museum, The National Constitution Center Museum, The Painted Bride, The Gershman Y, and James Oliver Gallery in Philadelphia; Mission 17 in San Francisco; and 626 Gallery in Los Angeles. Potsic’s solo exhibition at James Oliver Gallery (Enchanted Forest) was selected for discussion by The Review Panel, presented by ArtCritical at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2015. In the same year, her work was presented at the Delaware Contemporary in New Eyes: Experimental Photography Today where she was awarded Best in Show. Potsic received her MFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute and BA’s in Photojournalism and English Literature from Indiana University. She has held faculty appointments at the University of California at Berkeley, Ohlone College, and the San Francisco Art Institute and has been a guest lecturer at The University of the Arts, The Delaware Contemporary, and The International Center of Photography. Potsic is currently the Executive Director & Chief Curator of Main Line Art Center in Haverford, PA as well as Chair of the Artistic Advisory Board of the Art In City Hall program of the Office of Arts and Culture of the City of Philadelphia.” – About Amie Potsic

Marginal Utility is proud to present DC>3D, a solo exhibition by the New Jersey based artist Dave Carrow.

Dave Carrow has been a friend of MU and its’ predecessors since the beginning, and has exhibited with the curators previously. This is an opportunity to keep that relationship current. Included will be sculpture, hybrids of sculpture/ furniture, related objects, accessories, and photographs.

“I am using a combination of elements; formed/fabricated assemblies which contain kinetic and interactive components, found objects- curiosities and collectibles of various shapes, colors, origins and materials- which are designed and constructed to invite participation, display a sense of humor, and play with the notions of scale and time.” – Dave Carrow

RED, 3rd Street Gallery

3rd Street Gallery Annex exhibition, RED, to benefit the Philadelphia chapter of the American Heart Association™, this February 3rd – 26th, 2017!

3rd Street Gallery Annex is pleased to present RED, an invitational exhibition and sale of original artworks organized in partnership with the Philadelphia chapter of the American Heart Association (AHA) to generate awareness and support for the work of the American Heart Association and celebrate Philadelphia’s vibrant visual arts.

Participating artists include the members of 3rd Street Gallery and their invitees. All work will be 12″ x 12″, priced at $500 and under, and will feature the color red, which each artist will interpret in their own unique way. The theme highlights February as American Heart Month, as well as the AHA’s Go Red For Women campaign and Friday February 3rd, National Wear Red Day ™, which raise awareness of heart disease and stroke in women. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of works will benefit the American Heart Association.

Exhibition Highlights:

First Friday, February 3rd, 5:00 – 9:00pm

First Friday Opening Event, 5:00 – 7:00pm. American Heart Association staff will be in attendance and available to answer questions about the AHA’s mission and about heart health. Participants are invited to wear red for the occasion.

Closing Reception, Sunday February 26th, 1:00 – 3:00pm. Refreshments will be served. Brief lectures on heart health will be featured, topics TBA.

3rd Street Gallery, an artist-run fine arts gallery, opened its first space in 1978 on the corner of 3 rd  and Bainbridge in South Philadelphia. It has shown numerous artists since its inception and currently hosts fifty member-artists. These multigenerational, award-winning artists hold advanced degrees in the arts and sciences, work in diverse traditional and contemporary media, and have their works included in collections at museums, as well as in corporate and private collections.

The American Heart Association™ (AHA) is the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. Founded by six cardiologists in 1924, the organization now includes more than 22.5 million volunteers and supporters. The AHA funds innovative research, fights for stronger public health policies, and provides critical tools and information to save and improve lives.

DJ Robert Drake

DJ Robert Drake, Interview by Jimmi Shrode, 80’s New Wave Music

Robert Drake is synonymous with music in Philadelphia. When I met Robert in 1984, we were habitues of the Kennel Club, a now defunct New Wave/Punk Night Spot. The soundtrack of the Reagan era 80’s was New Wave/Post Punk music and we were steeped in it all. DJ Robert Drake is one of the most beloved radio and night club personalities in Philly. He started Sex Dwarf, a New Wave Dance Party following his 40th Birthday Party at Fluid Nightclub. Now in it’s 13th Year, Sex Dwarf is still going strong at Club Mousai at 1217 Walnut Street, Philadelphia. The second Friday of each month is a tribute to various influential New Wave Artists and music trends, such as the New Romantics, Synthpop and Electronic Music. You can listen to DJ Robert Drake on WXPN, Land of the Lost, all 80’s New Wave/Post Punk music, the Final Friday of the month from 7:00 – 11:00PM. Drake is also the co-host of Kids Corner, a live, interactive radio show for children and host of Q’Zine; a look at Queer Culture and Arts at 11:30pm on Sunday nights. Who is DJ Robert Drake? Tell me about yourself.

“Born and raised in Philly, I carry my torch for Philly high and proud …. I love my hometown and always look for a chance to showcase it to new people. I’ve worked in radio for almost 30 years – all at one radio station (unheard of in this industry). I love music – but treasure my quiet time alone at home. I have a dog named Nomi – after my idol Klaus Nomi.”

What is your favorite part of being a Philly DJ?

“Being able to create a vibe and mood that will (hopefully) resonate with those attending the party – creating memories, friendships and even sparks of love by last call.”

Where’s your favorite place to play? Radio or clubs?

“While I love spinning for the masses – there’s something very personal about being on the radio. Even though I am reaching thousands of people at any second, I am talking to just one of them – and hopefully connecting with them as well.”

When did you decide to be a DJ?

“I stepped into the DJ mode back when I was hanging at a punk bar in Philly called The Love Club at Broad and South Streets … they had two scratchy Radio Shack turntables and I offered to play some of my LPs one happy hour … I was hooked! That had to be, wow – almost 27 years ago!”

Why do you prefer 80’s New Wave?

“As most people, it’s the soundtrack of my youth. But it’s also more – it’s inspired the current wave of pop music artists and so much of the 80s New Wave sounds like it could have been produced today … I love showcasing it!”

How would you advise aspiring DJ’s?

“As much as you might want to learn the best computer software programs – resist. Take time to learn the music itself. Don’t let the computer dictate what song should come next. Learn to read the crowd and be ready to make changes at any second. There’s no such thing as a playlist – so do NOT go into a gig with a plan. Just have fun!”
