Philadelphia Open Studio Tours 2017THIS OCTOBER: Explore. Discover. Connect with a vibrant artist community during Philadelphia Open Studio Tours

October 7: South | October 8: Northeast | October 14: Northwest | October 15: West | FROM NOON – 6:00 PM

PHILADELPHIA, PA – September 11, 2017. From October 7 through October 15, 2017 the Center for Emerging Visual Artists (CFEVA) will present the 18th annual Philadelphia Open Studio Tours (POST)—a behind-the-scenes look at a day in the life of a visual artist. Discover Philadelphia’s creative gems—artist studios, house galleries, maker spaces and community workshops—as hundreds of artists throw open their doors and bring the artistic process front and center in twenty Philadelphia neighborhoods.

POST is a community building initiative designed to strengthen bonds within the visual artist sector, foster meaningful interaction between artists and the public, and promote a greater awareness for the creative minds that make Philadelphia a vibrant place to live, work, and visit. New this year, POST is four distinct quadrants: South, Northeast, Northwest and West. The program spotlights the vitality of each neighborhood’s visual arts scene and underscores the important contributions artists make to our city’s economy and civic life.

No other open studio event in the region provides a rich and diverse cultural experience to the public, free of charge.

Philadelphia Open Studio Tours is made possible with generous support from Sonesta Hotel Philadelphia, myCIO Wealth Partners, LLC, Reed Smith LLP, University of Pennsylvania and 40ST Artist-in-Residence Program. Remembering

Remembering the Past, Confronting the Future

Remembering the Past, Confronting the Future at Main Line Unitarian Church Fireside Gallery January 11- February 25, 2017

(Philadelphia, PA  December, 2016) Main Line Unitarian Church, Fireside Room Gallery, 816 South Valley Forge Road, Devon, PA 1933 presents Remembering the Past, Confronting the Future, Holocaust Art by Linda Dubin Garfield and Elsa Wachs from January 11 to February 25, 2017. The public is invited to a free artists’ reception on Sunday, January 29, 1- 3 PM.

With three shows, artists Linda Dubin Garfield and Elsa Wachs have collaborated on the theme of the Holocaust. Together and separately they explored, examined and expressed important issues through their art. In “Remembering the Past, Confronting the Future” they have combined them to make a powerful progression, sequencing history to affirming action.

Their brief, intimate peeks into the lives of those caught in the fiery Holocaust are what remembrance is all about. In these vignettes we see the threads that hold humanity together becoming the building blocks for our shared existence and hope for a better future

Here the artists have 18 works on paper and 18 fiber mixed media works.  Why 18 each? The word “chai’ translated from Hebrew to English means “life” and “18.”  Within the Jewish faith, the word “chai” possesses both numerical and symbolic meaning. The Hebrew word consists of two  letters in the alphabet: Chet and Yud. Together these letters form “chai” which signifies life and represents being alive . The artists ask the viewers to reflect on, deliberate, resolve, and hopefully pledge to help repair this world.

Reunion

SAGE Reunion TourALL NEW WORK by David Foss, Don Kaiser, Heather Rachel Phillips, Henry Bermudez, Jon Manteau, Michelle Marcuse, Nic Coviello, Raphael Fenton-Spaid, Robert Solomon and Vincent Romaniello

SAGE REUNION TOUR

BLAM Projects Brooklyn
Opening reception: 6 to 9pm, Friday, October 7
Show runs through October 30, 2016
Hours: 11am to 6pm, Friday, Saturday and Sunday

BLAM Projects 56 Bogart Street, Brooklyn, NY 11206

The Sage Reunion Tour will bring together 10 of the original members, each showing how their work has evolved since their Philadelphia project space closed in 2009. A variety of media are planned including: painting, sculpture, photography, performance, banners and video.

About Sage Projects
In late 2008 a group of Philadelphia artists organized visits to each other’s studios. Many of the artists enjoyed the tours and other artist’s work so much that they wanted to take the group a step further.

The perfect opportunity to form a cooperative came in early 2009 when the US economy crashed leaving many small businesses in dire straits. A team of business leaders in a popular tourist area, known as South Street, put out a call asking for arts groups to occupy vacant storefronts, cost free, in the hopes of bringing life back to the area. That’s when David Foss, artist and director of DaVinci Art Alliance, and Vincent Romaniello applied for and got the green light on a 2,000 sq ft, two story, empty storefront.

During the run of Sage Projects over 250 artists, musicians, filmmakers and other artists were given the opportunity to share the space and to bring their work to a wider audience.

Performance Information
Conceptual Punk-a-Rock-a-Billy-Blues ensemble MagicCarpet ManCave will be
performing both original compositions and covers during the opening reception on Friday,
October 7, between 6-9pm during the exhibition reception.

As a mixed race artist Heather Raquel Phillips takes her experience of marginality to
create spaces for bodies using personal story telling and attempted acrobatic feats. Phillips, along with musicians Meg Widholm and Mike Woloszczuk, will be performing on Saturday, October 22, at 8pm during the Exchange Rates expo.

THE EXHIBITION

Mike Pavol, Da Vinci Art Alliance

THE ARTIST

Mike Pavol, originally from Phoenix, Arizona, started painting as a boy. After moving to Philadelphia in 1988 he studied at PAFA and Fleisher Art Memorial. Pavol creates oil paintings in many genres, including landscape, still life, and portraiture. Working from life and other sources, Pavol creates unique images that convey the vitality and depth of the subject, and his own personal perspective. Pavol’s work has been described as “Delicately perceptive and at times experimental, these works both uphold and challenge his medium of choice, as well as his own intentions.” He currently lives with his wife and son, quite a lot of cats, and a very soulful dog.

Mannequin: A Group Photography Exhibition At Da Vinci Art Alliance – Opening January 6th

(Philadelphia, PA December 15th, 2015) Da Vinci Art Alliance, 704 Catharine  Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147 invites the public to Mannequin: A Group Photography Exhibition January 6th – 31st. Regular gallery hours for this exhibition will be Wednesdays, 6:00 – 8:00PM,Saturdays and Sundays, 1:00 – 5:00PM with an opening reception on January 6th from 6:00 – 9:00PM.

This exhibition shows the collective work of 30 Philadelphia-area photographers, each who share their own unique viewpoint of mannequins and their roles as life size models. The zany appeal of these articulated dolls prove both attractive and disconcerting at the same time; mysterious yet strangely familiar. This interesting dichotomy is being explored and interpreted through the vision of each artists’ lens.

“As this project has unfolded, I’ve come to observe and photograph mannequins of several different configurations, located in windows and within merchandizing displays,” says curator Laura Storck.

Mannequin, Laura StorckChelseaquin by Laura StorckMannequin: A Group Photography Exhibition at Da Vinci Art Alliance

“These models can vary demographically by neighborhood – even though the stores could be selling essentially the same product, each has a unique style and ambience which is reflected in their mannequins – the pose, color, and choice of whether or not to use a realistic face versus abstract, or even headless versions. The more expensive the clothing, the more rich-looking the mannequin seems. Mannequins in windows tend to have faces and are more eye catching, whereas those within the retail environment appear utilitarian. These silent salespeople were held in high regard during the surrealism movement of the early 20th century, as these objects blurred the lines between animate and inanimate, human and machine, the sexualized and the sexless, and ultimately life and death.”
