Each of these books has been constructed from a single-sheet surface that is no larger than 11 x 17 inches. Over one hundred artists submitted books, addressing the theme: ritual.

Charles Cushing, Painting Buenos Aires 2013

Charles Cushing, Painting Buenos Aires 2013 Kickstarter Campaign

Charles Cushing is returning to Buenos Aires to continue his project of painting and drawing in the birthplace of Argentine tango! After the success of his 2012 trip, he is eager to return, this time with a greater knowledge of the city (and Spanish!) and its characteristic “haunts” and treasures. The Painting Buenos Aires 2012 trip was partially financed by 40 “backers” many of whom chose as their pledge reward original drawings, oil paintings or “fileteado” panels. Charles had a great art exhibition/milonga upon his return at Buttonwood Dance Studio and all of the patrons appear to be pleased with their purchases!

Listed below are the rewards for pledging to Charles Cushing, Painting Buenos Aires 2013 Kickstarter Campaign:

  • Pledge $10 or more

Reward #1 Invitation to exhibition preview of the work produced on the trip. backers at this level will be personally invited to the exhibition (in early 2014, upon my return) of my artwork and will have the opportunity to view/purchase artwork which has not been reserved for “backers.” Estimated delivery: Mar 2014

  • Pledge $30 or more

Reward # 2: NOTE-CARDS: boxed set (16 cards with envelopes) of 5×7″ folding note-cards. These are non-religious winter scenes of Philadelphia, ideal for Christmas/ Hanukkah greetings. The cards can be shipped to you, shipping is included. Estimated delivery: Oct 2013. Ships within the US only

  • Pledge $50 or more

Reward # 3: PRINT: Signed print from one of the “offset lithographs” on my website, www.charlescushing.com. These are the prints listed as retail $50 on my website. Shipping in a tube (if needed) is included. These are Phialdalphia scenes. Estimated delivery: Dec 2013. Ships within the US only

  • Pledge $60 or more

NEW REWARD CATEGORY! I am offering my recently completed painting “Angels in ‘El Cementerio de la Recoleta” as a small matted print roughly 12×8″ (image size) with a single mat which will bring the overall piece to roughly 18×14.” The print is signed, matted, and back, ready for framing. Shipping available for additional fee. Estimated delivery: Jan 2014. Ships within the US only

  • Pledge $100 or more

Reward # 4: SMALL DRAWING of a Buenos Aires scene! A small drawing (roughly 7×9″) in ink on heavy paper, matted and backed, wrapped in mylar for protection. Framing NOT included. Drawings are original, signed, archival quality, and suitable for framing. These are small, spontaneous ink sketches, typically done “from life” in an hour or two. Estimated delivery: Dec 2014. Ships within the US only

  • Pledge $135 or more

Reward # 5: LIMITED EDITION PRINT from Buenos Aires painting! This is a high-quality “giclee” print from one of the Buenos Aires paintings, size roughly 18×24.” Price is for print only (framing not included). Many of the paintings are available in this format. Estimated delivery: Jan 2014. Ships within the US only

  • Pledge $200 or more

Reward # 6: “FILETEADO” PANEL: 12×16″ wood panel painted with your name or brief message in the distinctive “fileteado” style unique to Buenos Aires. Hand-painted by myself with decorative vignettes of your choice. Google “fileteado” to view samples of this unique calligraphic style, associated with Buneos Aires and Argentine Tango. I took private lessons with master “fileatador” Alfredo Genovese in Buenos Aires in 2012 to familiarize myself with this art form. Estimated delivery: Mar 2014. Ships within the US only

  • Pledge $300 or more

reward # 7: INK DRAWING: (see the framed drawing in the video that Peter Kress is describing). Roughly 12×16″ highly articulated original ink drawing on archival paper executed in Buenos Aires. Drawings this size involve considerable contemplation and design work as well as multiple sittings or studio completion. light being (Kurt)

light being (Kurt), Absolutely Abstract 2013, Philadelphia Sketch Clublight being (Kurt), digital photograph, archival inkjet print on glossy paper, 11 x 14″, 16 x 20″ framed, $300.00, DoN Brewer, Absolutely Abstract 2013, Philadelphia Sketch Club

When the sole juror for Absolutely Abstract 2013 at the Philadelphia Sketch Club, appreciates your work enough to select it to be in an art show the sense of accomplishment is extraordinarily gratifying. The digital photograph of an acid green wall combines several contemporary styles like color field, minimalism, performance, street art and computer art and even though it is a representative image the bold color takes over the narrative. The light becomes the environmental paint, the reflections on the surface interact softly with the hard grid of the cinder block. To know that someone else gets it, another artist, understands the underlying concept, and recognizes the inspiration reinforces my determination to continue the exploration of the abstract landscape theme.

How can a photograph be abstract? Because photography doesn’t really represent reality, it is a simulacra of a moment in time and therefore can be whatever the artist wants. An inkjet print is so different from darkroom photography, it’s more like painting with dots of ink than the chemical reactions of film development in the lab.

Thank you Philadelphia Sketch Club for the opportunity to be part of this exciting exhibit of contemporary abstract art by regional and international artists.

An Artists’ Reception will be held on Sunday, August 11, from 2 to 4 PM.  Gallery hours are Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 5 PM.  Admission is free.

disorder: eating

disorder: eating, QR Code, inkjet print, YouTube video, DoN BrewerFeast Your EyesOff the Wall Gallery at Dirty Franks

The Eighth Annual Community Art Show at Off the Wall Gallery at Dirty Franks is titled Feast Your Eyes, a themed group art show ostensibly related to food. DoN‘s entry is a QR code that links to a YouTube video called disorder: eating that was produced in 2002 and uploaded to YouTube in 2006. When DoN made this video food had become an annoying, painful need that all the joy had seeped out of.

The video uses found video footage from early food porn TV shows that was recorded on a VCR then transferred to a computer. The clips of people eating food are played in reverse, repeated, slowed down and zoomed in creating a disorienting, revolting vision of the opposite of eating. What if food came out of your mouth instead of going in? When DoN heard that two of the judges were so grossed out they couldn’t look he knew he had struck a nerve. Art should scare the kids.

The video is a comment on the culture of food in mass media and how not all people appreciate the fact of life of the necessity of eating. The ugly/beautiful aspect of the imagery reflects the disconnect many people feel towards the importance of food. Super-model Kate Moss famously said, “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.”

Thank you so much to Off the Wall Gallery for awarding disorder: eating the Most Bio-Engineered Award, the prize is a book titled Medium Raw: A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook (P.S.) by Anthony Bourdain, the famous TV chef who visited Dirty Franks and introduced the art bar to the world. The Summer show is winding down, go buy some art to feed your mind and spirit. And continue your support of the Philadelphia art community and Off the Wall Gallery at Dirty Franks by collecting art by local contemporary artists. A framed print of the disorder: eating QR code is only $20.00.
