Inside the Bloody Beehive with Artist Judith Schaechter

“The first time I ever heard of artist Judith Schaechter was sometime back in the early 1980’s when we were both in a group show at Philadelphia’s Art Alliance. She had  this small unassuming painting that I have never forgotten. Judith stopped painting and went on to excel in another medium, stained glass, and on October 17th, 2015 I went back to the Philadelphia Art Alliance to see a dazzling display of her work. Later, I spent an afternoon at Judith’s home and studio. I believe that this funny, brilliant woman is one of the world’s greatest living artists.” – John Thornton

“For the past 10 years on her birthday, Linda Dubin Garfield has a party and asks her guests to make collages on a theme. Months later, at the Book Trader, as a part of the Philly Fringe Festival,Linda exhibits these, as well as her own art, and invites the public to participate. All of the proceeds from sales go to charity. This year’s theme is “Family”, and the recipient is Family Support Services.” – John Thornton

The Philadelphia Sketch Club 155The Philadelphia Sketch Club 155th Anniversary Gala, Diane Burko, Vincent Desiderio, Garth Herrick, Barbara and Richard Rosenfeld

Please join us for our 155th Anniversary Gala on Saturday, October 17th. The Gala will be held at The Philadelphia Sketch Club, 235 S. Camac Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107, from 7:00 to 11:00 PM. You will have a fun time and get to mix with many prominent members of the artistic community.

The Philadelphia Sketch Club will honor three of America’s top artists, Diane Burko, Vincent Desiderio and Garth Herrick, with the presentation of the Philadelphia Sketch Club Medal. We will also present medals to Barbara and Richard Rosenfeld who ran the prominent Rosenfeld Gallery for nearly forty years. Many members of the Honorary Gala Committee will also be present. The Honorary Gala Committee includes: David R. & Holly Trostle Brigham (David is CEO of PAFA and Holly is an artist); Donald R. & Linda Aversa-Caldwell (Donald is Chair Emeritus of PAFA’s Board of Trustees); Bill Scott, artist; William R. Valerio, Director & CEO, Woodmere Art Museum; Kathleen A. Foster, Senior Curator of American Art at Philadelphia Museum of Art; David Weiss, Vice President at Freeman’s Auctions, Fine Art and Antiques and a specialist on the Antiques Roadshow; Dr. Luther Brady, MD and art patron; Liz Price, artist and former Fleisher Art Memorial President; Dick Ranck, artist; Cindy and John Affleck, President of Woodmere’s Board of Trustees; art patrons Joseph & Pamela Yohlin (Joe is on Woodmere’s Board of Trustees); Frank Giordano, CEO of Philly Pops; and Dianne Semingson, art patron and Chair of the Avenue of the Arts, Inc; and Derek Gillman, former CEO of PAFA and the Barnes Foundation and currently Distinguished Visiting Professor of Visual Studies at Drexel University.

In addition to the medal presentations, highlights of the evening will include an unreserved live auction of artworks by the honored artists as well as some contemporary and historic works by Ranck, Bye, DiStefano, Lear and Ricciardi and Simon. The live auction will be led by David Weiss, Vice President at Freemans and a specialist on the Antique Roadshow. There will be an open bar, hors d’oeuvres and a buffet dinner. The Gala is on the same weekend as PAFA’s Family & Alumni weekend. Given the strong connection between The Philadelphia Sketch Club and PAFA, and the number of PAFA individuals being honored at this year’s event, PAFA has agreed to promote the Gala as part of the schedule of events so we may be honored by a good number of PAFA alumni.

“The 2015 Windgate ITE International Residency Exhibition at The Center for Art in Wood. For 20 years Philadelphia’s Center for Art in Wood has hosted the Windgate ITE International Residency Program. This year, five artists, a scholar, and a photojournalist were brought to Philadelphia and given the opportunity and freedom to develop their work, explore new ideas, and learn from one another. I met this year’s extraordinary group at their exhibition which is called “allTURNatives: Form + Spirit 2015.” – John Thornton Films

“Celebrating The Center for Art in Wood‘s 20th year hosting the Windgate ITE International Residency Program, the resident fellows worked together for two months in Philadelphia to collaborate and focus on new directions in their work, which culminates in the allTURNatives: Form + Spirit 2015 exhibition in the Center’s Gerry Lenfest Gallery. This multidisciplinary exhibition will reflect each resident fellow’s experience including objects produced before and during the residency. Three dimensional work will be accompanied by photos, video, and other documentation depicting the summer experience. Making Beautiful Objects, The Art and Life of Stoney Lamar, John Thornton Films

Stoney Lamar makes beautiful sculptures out of wood and his work is traveling the country in a show called A Sense of Balance. His work can be seen at Philadelphia’s Center for Art in Wood and the Synderman – Works Galleries through April 18, 2015. He talks about his life and career and how Parkinson’s Disease is affecting his work. – John Thornton

“What is true is that no matter how striking, unique and evolutionary Stoney Lamar’s career has been, he arrived at its beginning some decades ago by an entirely different path. He learned his geometrical theory in a pool hall; he aggravated his minister-father; he grappled with a war; he set out in a career direction that he neither liked nor decided he was much good at; he almost by accident discovered what he was good at, at long last feeling the call in his hands and soul.” – excerpt artist statement Stoney Lamar

“William Stoney Lamar (b. 1951) has contributed exceptional skill and vision to the world of wood turning for over 25 years. Stoney Lamar’s sculpture is created primarily through a unique approach to multi-axial lathe work, giving his pieces a distinct sense of line and movement unlike other works of turned wood. He lets the shape, color and modeling of the wood determine a piece’s finished appearance and employs paint and metal in his forms. Stoney Lamar is a founder of the American Association of Woodturners, teaches and lectures, and has served on the boards of the American Craft Council, The Center for Craft, Creativity & Design, and of the Southern Highland Craft Guild. The Center for Art in Wood is proud to present this retrospective, the final venue on the national tour, in our Gerry Lenfest Gallery.” – Center for Art in Wood website
