THE EXHIBITION

The work combines mixtures of formal and intuitive devices, including the irregular grouping of panels, and incorporating unintended artifacts from the sketch into the final works.

THE ARTIST

Mike Pavol, originally from Phoenix, Arizona, started painting as a boy. After moving to Philadelphia in 1988 he studied at PAFA and Fleisher Art Memorial. Pavol creates oil paintings in many genres, including landscape, still life, and portraiture. Working from life and other sources, Pavol creates unique images that convey the vitality and depth of the subject, and his own personal perspective. Pavol’s work has been described as “Delicately perceptive and at times experimental, these works both uphold and challenge his medium of choice, as well as his own intentions.” He currently lives with his wife and son, quite a lot of cats, and a very soulful dog.

Life

Scott Noel, Peter Van Dyck, and Elise Schweitzer: The Life of a Painting. Video by John Thornton

“Philadelphia’s Gross McCleaf Gallery hosted two exhibitions of art made from direct observation. Scott Noel’s solo show called “Painted Confabulations”. The other show, “Mise en Scene: Pageant and Place”, featured Peter Van Dyck and Elise Schweitzer, and was curated by Scott Noel.

Scott Noel is not only an excellent artist, he is an intellectual and one of the leaders of a movement advocating for the return of representational painting based not on photography but grappling with the reality right in front of an artist. February of 2014, Scott organized a large exhibition of like minded painters at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts called ‘From Edwin Dickinson to the Perceptual Painters, Observation and Invention: The Space of Desire‘. As a curator, Noel was arguing that direct observation can yield painterly results that can be obtained in no other way. I see the two current shows at Gross McCleaf Gallery as a furtherance of this argument.” – John Thornton

Scott Noel began teaching and exhibiting in Philadelphia in 1980, after completing undergraduate study at Washington University in Saint Louis. Since that time he has mounted over thirty solo exhibitions at galleries, universities and museums as well as many group shows. Solo shows have appeared at the State Museum in Harrisburg, the University of Virginia, the Bowery Gallery, the Painting Center and fifteen exhibitions at the More Gallery, Mangel Art Gallery and Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia.” – PAFA Faculty web page

Gross McCleaf Gallery represents local and national artists with a focus on Contemporary Art. The gallery has been active in the Philadelphia arts community for over forty years, advising collectors and placing artists’ work in museums throughout the greater Philadelphia region. Gross McCleaf features monthly rotating exhibitions in two main galleries, special events, artist talks, and an extensive inventory. Our mission is to promote mid-career artists, while seeking to build the careers of emerging talents.” – About Gross McCleaf Gallery

The entrance garden of “ARTiculture” will be inspired by the paintings and dynamic sculptures of Alexander “Sandy” Calder, a member of the historic family of artists whose works are found throughout Philadelphia, and will feature a remarkable vertical dance troupe who will perform above and within the multi-dimensional display.

The region’s great garden clubs will be paired with area art schools – the University of the Arts, Philadelphia University, Moore College of Art, and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts – to compete in the show’s Artistic Classes.

Special exhibitions at the show will include a selection of the Andy Warhol “Flowers” Series from the Bank of America Collection; selections from the West Collection, of Oaks, Pa.; and works by sculptor Steve Tobin, of Bucks County, Pa.

International exhibitors in the 2014 show will include British garden designer Andy Sturgeon and Provence-based garden designer James Basson, whose exhibit will be inspired by a painting from the Collection of the Prince’s Palace Monaco.

An interactive exhibit designed by the Crayola Experience will give show visitors the opportunity to express themselves in the Convention Center’s Grand Hall. Visitors also will show their artistic side in an expanded “Make & Take Room,” where they can create a variety of craft and garden projects. The family attractions at the show will include the Butterfly Experience, where visitors will interact with 20 species of exotic and domestic butterflies, and the Camden Children’s Garden.

Let yourself bloom at the interactive, collaborative 2014 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show, and leave equipped to practice “ARTiculture” in your own home and garden.

Wishes/Lies/DreamsAlison Stigora and Jay Walker

Alison Stigora has created large scale installations for the Crane Arts Center Icebox GallerySkybox and Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts. For those projects she gleaned the forests to find logs to scorch black then arrange in flowing meditative assemblages arranged like a flood of logs through large spaces. By concentrating on wood her attention would naturally be drawn to paper products in the urban environment. Philadelphia has fallen wood but not enough to build an Alison Stigora sculpture, at 1616 Walnut Street she shows how recycling materials can expose the spark of enlightenment she experienced when she wanted to make art. The crystalized idea culminates in a structure that transforms the trash we create into something as luxurious and lustrous as gold.
