Portraits at Plastic at The Plastic Club, 247 South Camac Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107. December 7th – 21st.

Artist Reception and Awards: Sunday, December 7th, 2:00 – 5:00pm

Portraits at Plastic includes work that portrays a person–a likeness or description, including single and double-portraits (portraits of two people together), self-portraits, and abstract portraits.

“A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. For this reason, in photography a portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter or photographer, in order to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer.” – Wikipedia

Prize Juror: Sarah Stolfa, Fine Art Photographer and Educator, Founder/Executive Director of
Philadelphia Photo Arts Center, MFA Yale University, currently teaching at UPenn.

“Sarah Stolfa was born in Winfield, Illinois in 1975.  She earned her BS in photography from Drexel University, Philadelphia, in 2005 and her MFA in Photography from Yale University in 2008.  In 2004, Stolfa won The New York Times Photography Contest for college students and several of her photographs were reproduced in The New York Times Magazine.  In 2006, Stolfa was included in the Second Woodmere Triennial of Contemporary Photography at the Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia.  In the same year, her work was exhibited at Gallery 339 in Philadelphia and Silverstein Photography in New York.  In 2007, Stolfa was included in “Women to Watch” at Moore College of Art, Philadelphia, and in “L’Autre” at the Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery of the University of the Arts, Philadelphia.” – Gallery 339

Artful Giving, Da Vinci Art Alliance

DA VINCI ART ALLIANCE HOSTS ARTFUL GIVING 2014, A FUNDRAISER EVENT

Da Vinci Art Alliance invites the public to its annual fundraiser and art sale, ARTFUL GIVING 2014, a “brunch and bubbly” affair on Sunday, December 7, 2014, 12:00 – 4:00pm, at 704 Catharine Street in Philadelphia. Chaired by Linda Dubin Garfield, ARTFUL GIVING 2014 will include sales of original fine art contributed by member artists and artisans, and raffles of distinctive gift items such as gift certificates, museum memberships, etc. donated by businesses and cultural venues that support the artists and programs of Da Vinci Art Alliance.

Tickets to ARTFUL GIVING 2014 start at $35 ($45 at the door), additional donations are welcome.

Since its inception in 1931, the mission of Da Vinci Art Alliance as a dynamic organization confidently continues to meet the growing need for community-based arts, and cultural and educational dialogue for artists, individuals and families. Da Vinci is one of the few non-profit artist run organizations boasting ownership of a building since 1959. Requiring to move forward on major repairs of its stately structure, proceeds from ARTFUL GIVING 2014 will initiate Da Vinci Art Alliance’s Building Fund. 

Da Vinci Art Alliance is a public, non-profit 501(c)(3) artists’ organization located in South Philadelphia.The organization was founded in 1931 to serve the needs of professional artists and artisans in the Delaware Valley. Da Vinci currently has over 140 members and is supported through membership dues, gallery/studio rentals, sales commissions, grants, and donations. It holds exhibitions of members’ and non-members’ artwork as well as special events, workshops, performances, poetry readings, and lectures, and keeps its members informed on community events, news and opportunities. The mission of the non-profit artists-run organization is to support its members and to further community-based arts, cultural, and educational exchanges.

The Large Format Art show at the Philadelphia Sketch Club may not have as many paintings as a regular group art show but there is certainly a whole lot more paint. The walls are covered with large works of art that have at least one length be a minimum of forty inches, the largest painting by RJ Haas is 60″ x 60″, the size limit that could fit up the stairs to the historic gallery. The juried exhibition offers the opportunity to show large artworks that often exceed size constraints for group shows.

“The Philadelphia Sketch Club “support[s] and nurture[s] working visual artists ” by providing studio space through our workshops program as well as by providing exhibition and networking opportunities; we support “ the appreciation of the visual arts ” by providing free public access to our exhibitions; we support “ visual arts education ” through our low cost, open enrollment workshop program; and lastly, we promote “ the historical value of the visual arts to the community ” by providing free public access to our historic collections and facility.”

“Thomas Del Porte intends to tell a visual story within each stroke of paint.  His paintings are made with thousands of little jeweled, thorn like curls, each stroke acting as an individual painting.  He paints from direct observation in the attempt to capture a unique portion of the infinite qualities of light, line, color and spaces that nature provides. His goal is to communicate a visual quality that reveals something new within the movement and drama of the images he translates.” – Thomas Del Porte

Exhibitions at the Philadelphia Sketch Club attracts artists from the region, the USA and the world. To exhibit your work in the gallery is resume worthy but to win a prize is a valued award with bragging rights. I especially liked the medallions with the club’s iconic logo, a wonderful keepsake and an elegant addition to the awards ceremony.

“The Archives of the Philadelphia Sketch Club contain information on individual artists and also on how they interacted in an organization that possesses a unique camaraderie. A key part of the archives is Seventy-Five Years of the Philadelphia Sketch Club, the club history of over 1,000 pages that was compiled in 1936 by Sidney Lomas. Another key part of the archives are the individual artists files that contain information and documents gathered over the years.” – Philadelphia Sketch Club

Ruslan Khais studied at PAFA and Republican College of Fine Arts – Chişinău, his brilliant canvas, Last Sorcery of Autumn, Red and Yellow, stood out from the glorious fields of color, texture and composition of the surrounding artworks by being at once abstract yet naturalistic. When the artist was awarded his medallion and certificate he was absolutely thrilled saying to the assembled crowd, “I love Philadelphia!”

You ART What You Eat, The Plastic Club, 247 South Camac Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19107. Juried group art show September 7th through September 25th, artists reception and awards Sunday, September 7th, 2:00 – 5:00pm. New! Open Gallery Hours Sundays 12:00 – 5:00pm.

You ART What You Eat is a group art show, each artist has one entry, with works based (loosely) on the theme of food. Of course there are still life paintings and drawings, photographs and sculpture but there are Dada-ist twists like flying toast, lacquered mushed food, and a portrait titled, ‘Food for Thought’. Tasty!
