How do I Look?
Shifting Representations of Queer Identities
January 18th – 29th, 2017

This call is open to LGBTQ artists working in all mediums.
Work submitted must address personal, private, and public perceptions of the queer self and may also reflect on how these have historically changed over time. We are excited to have juror Craig Bruns, artist and Chief Curator at the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia as the juror for the show.

Deadline to submit is Saturday, January 7th, 2017, mid-night 
Submissions coming in after the deadline will not be accepted.
Notification of Acceptance Thursday, January 8th 2017

  • APPLICATION FEE IS $20 FOR MEMBERS AND $30 FOR NON-MEMBERS.  FEE COVERS MULTIPLE SUBMISSIONS WHICH ARE ENCOURAGED.

Da Vinci Art Alliance proudly presents our June exhibition and additional programming:

OVERVIEW

Philadelphia, PA  ­Da Vinci Art Alliancee, located at 704 Catharine Street will present Portraits and Such 2 a solo exhibition by Mike Pavol June 1st -­ June 29th. Opening reception is Wednesday June 1st 6:00 – ­9:00pm. Open gallery hours are Wednesday 6:00pm -­ 8:00pm and Saturday + Sunday 1:00pm -­ 5:00pm. In addition we will be open Friday, June 3rd from 6:00pm -­ 9:00pm.

THE EXHIBITION

The show consists of a group of representational and figurative oil paintings inspired from personal interests by South Philadelphia­ based painter Mike Pavol. The work combines mixtures of formal and intuitive devices, including the irregular grouping of panels, and incorporating unintended artifacts from the sketch into the final works.

THE ARTIST

Mike Pavol, originally from Phoenix, Arizona, started painting as a boy. After moving to Philadelphia in 1988 he studied at PAFA and Fleisher Art Memorial. Pavol creates oil paintings in many genres, including landscape, still life, and portraiture. Working from life and other sources, Pavol creates unique images that convey the vitality and depth of the subject, and his own personal perspective. Pavol’s work has been described as “Delicately perceptive and at times experimental, these works both uphold and challenge his medium of choice, as well as his own intentions.” He currently lives with his wife and son, quite a lot of cats, and a very soulful dog.

THE PROGRAMS

The ART of Tango ­ June 9th, 7pm -­ 8pm

Join us for an evening of visual art mixed with Tango. Lesley Mitchell is a Philadelphia­ based dance teacher who has intensely studied Argentine Tango for more than a decade. A well­known visual artist, dance is also a frequent theme of her visual artwork. Through demonstrations and projections of her artwork, we will learn about the simplicity, complexity and history of Argentine Tango. Who knows, you may also learn a few steps of your own! This event is free and open to the public.

Artist Talk ­ June 15th at 6pm- ­ 7pm

­ During open gallery hours, come hear from painter Mike Pavol as he guides us through his current exhibition. Free and open to the public.

Legal issues for Artists ­ June 16th, 7pm -­ 8:30pm

­ Laura Solomon, lawyer, and Rachel Nave, Interim Director of Legal Services for Philadelphia Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts will join us for our popular monthly Third Thursday Salon. This event is free and open to the public.

Portrait of Self: Visual and Narrative ­ June 20th, 6:30pm -­ 8:30 pm

Join DVAA and First Person Arts for a mixed­media memoir workshop led by Jamie J, storyteller, writer and Executive Director of First Person Arts and Linda Dubin Garfield, printmaker/mixed media artist. All materials are included but participants are invited to bring a significant something to include in the portrait. Members of FPA or DVAA­ $10., ­ Non Members­ $12.

Since its inception in 1931, the mission of Da Vinci Art Alliance as a dynamic organization confidently continues to meet the growing need for community­ based arts, and cultural and educational dialogue for artists, individuals and families. Da Vinci is one of the few non­profit artist­run organizations boasting ownership of a building since 1959.

Da Vinci Art Alliance is a public, non­profit 501(c)(3) artists’ organization located in South Philadelphia. The organization was founded in 1931 to serve the needs of professional artists and artisans in the Delaware Valley. Da Vinci currently has over 140 members and is supported through membership dues, gallery/studio rentals, sales commissions, grants, and donations. Mannequin: A Group Photography Exhibition At Da Vinci Art Alliance – Opening January 6th

(Philadelphia, PA December 15th, 2015) Da Vinci Art Alliance, 704 Catharine  Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147 invites the public to Mannequin: A Group Photography Exhibition January 6th – 31st. Regular gallery hours for this exhibition will be Wednesdays, 6:00 – 8:00PM,Saturdays and Sundays, 1:00 – 5:00PM with an opening reception on January 6th from 6:00 – 9:00PM.

This exhibition shows the collective work of 30 Philadelphia-area photographers, each who share their own unique viewpoint of mannequins and their roles as life size models. The zany appeal of these articulated dolls prove both attractive and disconcerting at the same time; mysterious yet strangely familiar. This interesting dichotomy is being explored and interpreted through the vision of each artists’ lens.

“As this project has unfolded, I’ve come to observe and photograph mannequins of several different configurations, located in windows and within merchandizing displays,” says curator Laura Storck.

“These models can vary demographically by neighborhood – even though the stores could be selling essentially the same product, each has a unique style and ambience which is reflected in their mannequins – the pose, color, and choice of whether or not to use a realistic face versus abstract, or even headless versions. The more expensive the clothing, the more rich-looking the mannequin seems. Mannequins in windows tend to have faces and are more eye catching, whereas those within the retail environment appear utilitarian. These silent salespeople were held in high regard during the surrealism movement of the early 20th century, as these objects blurred the lines between animate and inanimate, human and machine, the sexualized and the sexless, and ultimately life and death.”

Shades and Tones, Poems at an Exhibition, Da Vinci Art Alliance

Da Vinci Art Alliance, 704 Catharine Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147, is pleased to present SHADES & TONES: Poems at an Exhibition on Sunday, May 17, 2- 5 PM. Three fine poets will be reading their work- Rosemary Cappello, Maria Fama and David Kozinski.  In the gallery, the exhibition SURPRISE OF THE NEW, featuring local artists inspired by travel- Bobbie Adams, Rachel Citrino, Linda Dubin Garfield, Carla Lombardi and Barbara B Rosin runs through May 27, 2015 with a closing reception. Rosemary Cappello’s poetry has appeared in Voices in Italian Americana, Poet Lore, Iconoclast, Avanti Popolo, Sweet Lemons 2, Schuylkill Valley Journal, Poetry Ink, and many other publications from 1971 to the present. She has often been the featured reader at places where poets congregate in the Philadelphia area, as well as venues in New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut. She was invited to read her immigrant father, John Petracca’s poetry and her own on Ellis Island in 1979, a memorable experience. Her most recent readings were at Fergie’s Pub, sponsored by the Moonstone Arts Center, and the Lansdowne Library, for the Cadence Crafters poetry group. Her poems have been translated into Italian, Spanish, and French. Rosemary’s most recent chapbook is San Paride, named for the patron saint of Teano, Italy. She is currently working on a collection of love poems. Rosemary’s most time-consuming work is that of editing and publishing the annual literary journal, Philadelphia Poets, which she founded in 1980, and planning and presiding over readings in connection with that publication. A graduate of Notre Dame High School, Moylan, Pennsylvania, she received her BA, Summa cum Laude, from Widener University in Chester. Her awards include the Nearing Prize for Literature and Widener University’s Prose and Poetry Awards.

Maria Famà has written six books of poetry, co-founded a video production company, recorded her poetry in CD compilations of music and poetry, and given readings across the United States as well as on TV, Radio, Video, and Film.  She appears in the 2007 film, “Pipes of Peace,” about the late jazz bagpipe musician, Rufus Harley, as well as in the award winning documentaries “Prisoners Among Us,” and “La Mia Strada, My Way.”  Famà was awarded the 2002 and the 2005 Aniello Lauri Award for Creative Writing.  She was the 2006 winner of the Amy Tritsch Needle Award for Poetry.   Famà’s latest book of poems, Mystics in the Family, was published by Bordighera Press in 2013.  Maria Famà lives and works in Philadelphia, where she teaches English at DeVry University.

David P. Kozinski won the Dogfish Head Poetry Prize, which included publication of his chapbook, Loopholes. He has been the featured poet in Schuylkill Valley Journal. Publications include Apiary, Fox Chase Review, glimmertrain.com, Mad Poets Review, Philadelphia Stories, Poetry Repairs, Margie, and The Rathalla Review. Kozinski was one of ten poets chosen by Robert Bly for a workshop sponsored by American Poetry Review and has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize twice. Last November he conducted a poetry workshop for teens at the Montgomery County Youth Center and in 2012 offered a four-session workshop for adults titled “Poetry Presentation & Publication” at the Manayunk-Roxborough Art Center. He received Honorable Mention in Philadelphia Poets’ 7th Annual John & Rose Petracca & Family Award.In November 2007 he received the Dr. Eugene J. Szatkowski (“Schot-kov-ski’) Achievement Award from the Americans of Polish Descent Cultural Society (AMPOL) for his poetry and visual art. As a young child, he studied at the Delaware Art Museum. In the early 1970s he was a student at the École d’Art Americaines in Fontainebleau, France and was among the students who completed the first Art Major course offered at Tower Hill School in Wilmington, DE in 1974. Kozinski heads the publicity team for the Manayunk-Roxborough Art Center. He lives in Wilmington, DE with his wife, actress and journalist Patti Allis Mengers.
