Crane Building History

200710_history01

The Crane Company Building was built in 1905 out of cast concrete faced with brick in the Kensington warehouse and manufacturing area just north of Girard Avenue. It was designed by Philadelphia architect Walter Ballinger, an early innovator of concrete building techniques. The long wedge-shaped building was used as a plumbing warehouse, and had an adjacent three-story stable for delivery vehicles and draft horses. It was later used to process frozen seafood. The enormous concrete-block, first-floor addition which functioned as a walk-in freezer now serves as the Ice Box Project Space.

Progression

Paula Cahill, Progressions

“Progression” New Works by Paula Cahill

Crane Arts Building, through May 26th

In “Progression” we see Paula Cahill return to her “Calligraphy Series” with a playful eye on twenty-first century color, movement, and metaphor. Compositions, often created with one continuous line, meander, change color, move forward, backward, and sometimes off the page. Cahill describes her paintings as a metaphor for progress, a process integral to civilization. The painting experience is immersive for this artist and she wishes her viewers their own moments of immersion and contemplation as they move through the composition.

“Line and calligraphy have served as a record of that which is seen and heard for thousands of years. Opportunities to observe and record movement, edges, or sound with line surround me. By visually following the movements and edges of form and creating a written record, I form the catalysts for my paintings.  Compositions are often created with a single, continuous line that meanders, changes color, moves backward, forward, or connects back to the beginning.  Advancing through the painting process is a contemplative, immersive process and I wish the viewer their own momentary immersion as they progress through the composition. I see the paintings as a metaphor for progression, a process integral to individual lives and civilization as a whole. Every day, I ask myself what it means to use line as a form of artistic expression in the twenty-first century.” Paula Cahill Artist Statement

Afghan Sentry, Melissa Maldonni Haims, InLiquid

Melissa Maldonni Haims, InLiquid Art & Design

Melissa Maldonni Haims, Afghan SentryInLiquid Art & Design

So, let’s talk about the big pink phallic symbol in the room. The Ice Box Gallery is so big it can overwhelm some artworks and the InLiquid Benefit Auction features hundreds of artworks by Philadelphia’s finest artists. How do you stand out in the crowd? Afghan Sentry by Melissa Maldonni Haims, an enormous soft sculpture crocheted with an unfathomable amount of pink yarn managed to photo-bomb everybody else like an art exhibitionist. The shape of the piece, the color and the, um, tassel isn’t just a dick joke, the symbolism comments on the male gaze in the art world and society’s obsession with sex and the struggles of women artists in particular.

Every element of the piece is loaded with coded information from the mathematical equations required to shape the afghan to the lurid hue of pink – just the word is a meme for modern society – to the domination of the space with the use of scale. Afghan Sentry mixes meta-magical thinking with craft, history and uncanny truth.
