Call For Entries Art and Artisan Fair at Baker Industries October 24 – 25, 2015

A juried event benefiting Baker Industries, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit work rehabilitation program serving adults with intellectual and physical disabilities, recovering substance abusers, individuals on parole or probation, and the homeless.

Our Impact: While Baker Industries works to directly impact the quality of life of its program participants, the results are much more far-reaching: recidivism rates are reduced, welfare rolls are lowered, and taxpayer rolls are increased.

Our Bottom Line: Baker Industries accepts no government funding.  Our administrative costs are 8.6% of our operating expenses.  70% of revenue comes from payment of the jobs we do for our customers.  The balance is provided by individuals and organizations willing to make charitable contributions to our operating costs.

  • Entry Details: Send 3-4 images representative of what you will bring to the event with a $5 entry fee. Label JPEG images only as follows: image#_firstname_lastname.jpg.   • Jurors: Jurors will be state juried members of the Haverford Guild of Craftsmen, a chapter of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen. www.haverfordguild.org
  • 25-40 quality artists and crafters will be chosen.
  • All entries must be handmade by the entrant, original, and free of copyright infringement. No class or workshop art; no copies or likenesses of other work. 
  • All work must be for sale. 
  • All money will be collected by Baker Industries. Artists and artisans will receive payment within two weeks of the event. 
  • All items must be labeled and numbered; a list of items, with description if necessary, is required.
  • Painters chosen are asked to provide at least 10 paintings. Please provide racks, if possible.
  • Crafters will receive the area of a six-foot table. All items may not always be displayed together.
  • Fine artists may sell note cards and no more than 20 matted pieces (they will not be hung)
  • Hanging items more than 25 pounds and larger than 4 feet must be identified in submission
  • Artists and crafters are asked to attend the opening reception on October 24, 2015.

The Red Bull Art of Can Comes to Dilworth Plaza, Philadelphia

NATIONAL MULTI-MEDIUM ART COMPETITION COMES TO PHILADELPHIA’S DILWORTH PARK

Calling Artists of All Formats to Create for the 2015 Red Bull Art of Can  

PHILADELPHIA, PA. – What can a creative mind design and create, all starting with a can of Red Bull for inspiration?  Coming this fall, the landscape of Philadelphia’s Dilworth Park will be transformed into an interactive, digital and physical art gallery as the nationwide creative competition, Red Bull Art of Can, comes to the city known for it’s famed public art. Artists of varying formats and aspiring creatives from across the country are challenged to make a work of art inspired by a can of Red Bull.

Now through June 15th, submitted art can come in the form of all art disciplines including physical, and digital mediums. A selection will then be made by a panel of judges from the art community to be displayed at a special showcase at Dilworth Park in Center City Philadelphia.

Participants can submit to three categories in the 2015 competition:

  • “Physical Art”: A physical piece of art that uses the actual Red Bull Can as the primary material in the final work.
  • “Digital Displayed Art”:A work of art that can be displayed on a screen and includes a digital version of the Red Bull Can in the final piece.  We are not designating a specific format or genre.  Submissions could take the form of an animation, a digital short film, stop motion, or GIF. Essentially any displayed digital medium is fair game.
  • “Interactive Installation Art”:A piece of artwork that merges both the physical and digital world and uses the Red Bull Can as its primary source of inspiration.

The Red Bull Art of Can exhibition will run from October 1 through October 8, with a special public opening event the weekend of Oct 2 -3 at Dilworth Park.

ART IN LOVE PARK TO SUPPORT SURVIVORS OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Dawn’s Place to Display Public Art Project at Community Art Day: April 11 in Love Park

PHILADELPHIA –  Not many people are aware that slavery still exists. Most still find it hard to believe that slavery is happening in our country or state or neighborhoods today. Dawn’s Place the only residence of its kind in the tri-state area that proactively helps both domestic and international adult female victims of Commercial Sexual Exploitation (CSE) is striving to change that & in the neighborhoods of the Delaware Valley. And they need your support.

On Saturday, April 11 in Love Park (JFK Plaza) Philadelphia, Paint a Face for Dawn’s Place, a community art project to support survivors of human trafficking, will be displayed at Community Art Day. Art Day will take place from noon to 3:00 pm, featuring an outdoor installation of painted portraits of women, live music, spoken word performance, and live street portraits. “Human trafficking is just the tip of the iceberg”, says Sister Teresita Hinnegan, a medical mission Sister and co-founder of Dawn’s Place, a 9-bedroom residence in an undisclosed Philadelphia area location. It happens because of all the social and human injustice that’s been around from the beginning. We can focus on rescuing and restoring the victims, but unless we look at the demand side, the injustices that cause trafficking, it will continue.

Consider the following:

  • Within the United States, women, children and men are trafficked daily for commercial sex and forced labor.
  • Victims may be rich, poor, foreign nationals, U.S. citizens, adults, or children under 18.
  • Human trafficking generates $32 billion annually – half of that made in industrialized countries.
  • 80% of all transnational victims are women and girls.

 “It’s all about people who are living in poverty and have very few choices, and how to survive, Sister Teresita continues. Our culture has accepted prostitution. It s seen as a victimless crime. It is not. Prostitutes are labeled as criminals. They are not. They are victims. They need to be treated that way.”

Paint a Face for Dawn’s Place is a public art project organized by Dawn’s Place and Philadelphia artist, Joanna Fulginiti. The project asks members of the community to paint a face of a woman they love or admire. The paintings will be collected and displayed alongside information on human trafficking to rally community support for victims of this crime in the Delaware Valley. Community Art Day will include live performances by musician Rosa Diaz and artist Bonnie MacAllister. Members of the Photographic Society of Philadelphia will take professional street portraits that can be posted to social media or stored on a smartphone.

Lambertville Historical Society Paint Out

“I’m wondering whether you can recommend emerging artists in the greater Philly/Bucks County/central Jersey area who may want to participate in Lambertville Historical Society’s plein air event this year?  We like the idea of supporting emerging artists, and also want to keep price points generally below $1,000, which would be consistent with folks looking to gain exposure more than to make a bigger profit.” – Caroline Armstrong

We don’t have a prospectus per say, but here is the basic information below

  • Paint out is on Sunday, October 18th.  In the event of inclement weather, artists can paint another day prior to or following the House Tour.
  • While most work is done in oil, we have accepted pastels, acrylics, water color and this year, even a charcoal drawing.
  • Each artist may submit up to two works. Since the silent auction will be scheduled most likely three months following the paint out, artists are free to finish their work in the studio.
  • Subject matter – anything produced from within or of the City of Lambertville. By way of example: viewsheds, streetscapes, landscapes, farmstead, buildings (though note that straight on views of buildings don’t generate quite so much interest), people, river scenes, canal scenes, skyscapes, the list goes on.  Representational, abstract, all good.
  • No size requirements for the artwork.
  • Submissions must be framed or, if not meant for frames, be ready to hang (I think those with frames tend to do better).
  • Artists set the suggested retail price.  Note that we are very much looking for price points below $1,000 – they sell better.
  • Silent auction takes place in the winter  of 2016 (date still to be determined).
  • Opening bid for all artwork starts at 40% of suggested retail value.
  • Proceeds from the sale of artwork are split 50/50 between the artist and the Lambertville Historical Society.
  • Items that are not sold are returned to the artists.

Some interesting historical facts based on our three years of the plein air fundraiser thus far:  Year One: 23 artists, 35 works, 33 sold, Year Two: 26 artists, 38 works, 37 sold, Year Three: 23 artists, 35 works, 32 sold.

We have a selection committee that meets in late June to finalize the list of participating artists.  In the meantime, to the extent you know folks who would be interested based on the above info, or would like to contact me or have me contact them to discuss this further, that would be absolutely great.
