Admission to the gallery and reception is free and open to the public.
The public program begins at 6:00 pm, led by guest curator Daniel Tucker in dialogue on art, geography, and agricultural planning with Professor Megan Bucknum Ferrigno from Rowan University’s School of Geography and Environment, and with exhibiting artists.

Artists explore the US food supply chain and its complex patterns of distribution in between the point of origin (the farm) and its point of consumption (the plate). The exhibition aims to highlight the work of contemporary artists grappling with the complexity of this movement through multi-media, research-based, and participatory practices that focus a lens on the social and industrial impacts of migrant workers, food justice movements, immigration, multiculturalism, and economic disparities. This project builds upon Tucker’s event series, Moving Units: Where Food & Economy Converge. A companion booklet, produced by Rowan University Art Gallery, serves to provide a general overview of US food supply chains. It includes descriptions of the artist contributions to the exhibition that relate to each step on the chain. Throughout this booklet you read about an approach to geographic education that values connecting with the world outside the classroom. The booklet was researched and written by Megan Bucknum Ferrigno, part-time faculty member of Rowan University’s Department of Geography, Planning and Sustainability. Additional contributions made by Dr. Chuck McGlynn, Dr. Jennifer Kitson and Makenzie Franco.

About the Artists and Projects

With Corner Store, Amber Art & Design – a team of Philadelphia-based artists that work on public art within marginalized communities that have little or no access to art – explores the contemporary sociological and psychological intersection between pan-ethnic Black and Asian communities in Philadelphia and how relationships are shaped based on which side of the counter we stand. Illinois-based artists Ryan Griffis and Sarah Ross are represented by Between the Bottomlands and the World, a video (combining photographs, narrative writing, and moving images) exploring the rural Midwestern town of Beardstown, IL, a place of global exchange and international mobility, inscribed by post-NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) realities.

Brian Holmes, an art and cultural critic with a Ph.D. in Romance Languages has a long-standing interest in neoliberal globalization and a taste for on-the-ground intervention. His online atlas, Living Rivers, is devoted to the Mississippi and Great Lakes watersheds and shows these fluid ecosystems as they are inhabited by a multitude of creatures and radically altered by human enterprise.

Otabenga Jones & Associates, a Houston-based educational art organization, documents a collaborative art project and public health program addressing the ongoing crisis of obesity and its related risks with “The People’s Plate.” Inspired by the Black Panther Free Breakfast for School Children Program, this art project includes a public mural in Houston and programs to kick off a year-long commitment to health education.

Cynthia Main, a multidisciplinary artist from Missouri focuses on relating to the land as part of an integral view of a more sustainable society. She shares her hand-made buckets and barrels created using traditional techniques to readdress storage as one of the current dilemmas of localizing production.

Chicago’s Claire Pentecost uses photography to show how industrial agriculture is only partly about supplying food and how it is structured to meet the problem of expense and excess capital accumulation when considering the cost of complex machinery, brand name chemical herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, fertilizers, and patented seeds.

Philly Stake is a locally-sourced, recurring dinner that raises funds for creative and relevant community engaged projects that contributes to the well-being of Philadelphia’s neighborhoods through community arts, urban agriculture, social services, and activist work.

Stephanie Rothenberg’s Reversal of Fortune: The Garden of Virtual Kinship is a garden in the form of a global map that explores the question of what it means to be charitable through the click of a button and examines the cultural phenomena of online crowd-funded charity and how the flow of money impacts the project, positively and negatively.

Candice Smith runs Freedom Arts, an after school collaborative art program at Camden’s Freedom Prep Middle School, which is creating an installation responding to the idea that Camden is a “food desert” and examining the movement of food at their school and in their community.

Philadelphia-based Kristen Neville Taylor’s installation – a globe depicting routes of oranges and actual oranges outfitted with a QR code that links to music, articles, folk tales, and art – was inspired by a lyric from Leonard Cohen’s “Suzanne” (“and she feeds you tea and oranges that come all the way from China”) which she associated with the market place and the movement of food but also romance and exotic foreign cultures.

Face Value at Main Line Art CenterHistory and New Technology Join Forces in Face Value at Main Line Art Center

Featuring Nick Cassway, Mark Khaisman & Steven Earl Weber

From man’s first sketches on the cave wall, to the rise of the “selfie,” the portrait has been an ever-present subject matter for artists.  The power of the portrait to tell a story, illuminate social injustices, or capture a moment in time lies in the pictorial representation as well as the media and process by which it was made.  In Face Value, presented at Main Line Art Center October 6 to November 5, artists Nick CasswayMark Khaisman, and Steven Earl Weber uniquely approach portraiture and social commentary through the manipulation of packaging tape, computer cut stencils, and printed glass.  Referencing film noir, Khaisman will be exhibiting his signature lightboxes as well as a site specific installation on nine windows in the gallery.  Cassway will be exhibiting a new series based on a civil war drama created with his analog-to-digital-to-analog process that incorporates drawings edited together in Photoshop and output to computer cut stencils with house paint and metal leaf.  Influenced by early photographic processes and his immediate surroundings, Steven Earl Weber’s new work will be seen as shadows reflected on surfaces from mirrors and panes of glass to illicit empathy and identification with his subjects.  All three artists look to the past for inspiration and embrace new technologies in production to create compelling and surprising work that is both timely and timeless.

Face Value is curated by Amie Potsic, Executive Director of Main Line Art Center, and is presented in partnership with Pentimenti Gallery, of Old City Philadelphia, as part of the DesignPhiladelphia Festival.  The Art Center will host an artist talk on Friday, October 10 from 5:30 to 6:30 pm, followed by a public reception from 6:30 to 8:30 pm featuring fare from Cricket Catering and samplings from the center’s wine sponsor, Barefoot Wine & Bubbly.  The artist talk, reception and gallery visits are free and open to the public. The gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 10 am to 8 pm, and Friday throughSunday from 10 am to 4 pm.  Additional programs for Face Value include a Screenprinting on Non-Traditional Surfaces workshop with Steven Earl Weber on Wednesday, October 8 from 6:30 to 9:30 pm; Analog to Digital to Analog Drawings workshop with Nick Cassway on Wednesday, October 22 from 6:30 to 9:30 pm; and a workshop on Painting with Packing Tape with Mark Khaisman on Wednesday, November 5 from 6:30 to 9:30 pm.  For more information about these programs and registration, visit www.mainlinert.org or call 610.525.0272.

Born in the Ukraine, Mark Khaisman studied art and architecture at the Moscow Architectural Institute and now lives and works in Philadelphia. Khaisman worked for several decades in architecture, animation, and stained glass design. In 2005, Khaisman began exhibiting his signature tape works.  His artwork has been exhibited and published internationally with exhibitions at Pentimenti Gallery in Philadelphia; Volta Art Fair in New York; Ampersand Foundation PF in Barcelona, Spain; Contemporary Istanbul Art Fair; The Science Museum in London, England; and Vitra Design Museum, in Weil am Rhein, Germany.  His works have been acquired by The West Collection, NBC, British Airlines, and The Delaware Art Museum. Additionally, his work has been featured in, Wired Magazine, Flush Magazine, and the Huffington Post.

Nick Cassway received a BFA in painting from the Tyler School of Art in 1990. He has exhibited his drawings, prints, and site-specific installations both locally and nationally with recent solo exhibitions at James Oliver Gallery in Philadelphia. His work has been featured in The Philadelphia Inquirer, the ArtBlog, Grid Magazine, and Art News.  Cassway is deeply vested in the Philadelphia arts community and was formerly the executive director of NEXUS/foundation for today’s art. Steven Earl Weber received his BFA from Kent State University and his MFA from the University of Delaware.  A resident of Philadelphia, his sculptures and installations have been exhibited locally and internationally with exhibitions at Summerhall Arts, Edinburgh, Scotland; Roxy Art House & The Demarco European Art Foundation, Edinburgh, Scotland; Hunter College of Art, New York, NY; and The Painted Bride Art Center, Hidden City, and James Oliver Gallery in Philadelphia. Additionally, his work has been featured in The New York Times, The Scotsman Newspaper, and Art in America.  Weber has been the Gallery Director at the Philadelphia Sculpture Gym Gallery, served as adjunct faculty at the University of Delaware and Drexel University’s Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts and Design, and is currently the Exhibition Designer at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art.

Amie Potsic, curator of the exhibition, began her tenure as Executive Director of Main Line Art Center in July of 2012.  Prior to that, she served as Director of Gallery 339 and Director of the Career Development Program at the Center for Emerging Visual Artists (CFEVA) in Philadelphia where she curated exhibitions and planned professional development programming for emerging and professional artists. Potsic has curated over 70 exhibitions at venues including The Philadelphia Museum of Art, Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and Moore College of Art & Design. Potsic is also an established photographic artist who has exhibited her work nationally and internationally.  In addition, she is currently Chair of the Art In City Hall Artistic Advisory Board to the City of Philadelphia’s Office of Arts, Culture & the Creative Economy.

DesignPhiladelphia, a signature event of the Philadelphia Center for Architecture, is the oldest and largest design event of its kind in the country and annually showcases the work of over 400 practicing architects, designers, and creative professionals. Pentimenti Gallery, located in Old City Philadelphia, features content driven contemporary art which challenges traditional materials and aesthetics by a line of internationally established artists alongside young talent. On Saturday, April 6, The Plastic Club will host a screening and discussion with award-winning, iconoclastic filmmaker Ken Jacobs as part of its monthly Salon series. The event is scheduled for 6:30-8:30 pm, at The Plastic Club, 247 South Camac St. in Center City Philadelphia. It’s open to the public, but reservations are required, and there is a $10.00 fee. To reserve a place(s) and for payment information e-mail The Plastic Club at plasticclub@att.net Ken Jacobs created and directed the Millennium Film Workshop in New York City (1966-68) and in 1969 started the Cinema Department at SUNY Binghamton, where he taught until 2003. He is the recipient of AFI’s Maya Deren Award, Guggenheim and Rockefeller fellowships, and many other honors. His work has been admitted to the National Film Registry, included in art and film festivals and museums around the world, and featured in retrospectives at The Museum of Modern Art, The American Center, Paris, and The American Museum of the Moving Image.
Star Spangled to Death“, Jacobs’ epic history of the United States, premiered at the 2004 New York Film Festival and won the Douglas Edwards Experimental/Independent Film/Video Award at the 2004 Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards.

Social Networking Workshop at The Plastic Club Salon

The Plastic Club Salon requested DoN to do a workshop for artists on how to use Social Networking. The workshoptake place Saturday 2/23/13 at 6:30pm. The Plastic Club has purchased a hot spot for internet access so participants can bring a laptop and play along. The cost is $10.00 to cover the cost for internet access.

The session will be interactive, the agenda is broad:

  • Brand Identity: What is your product? Who is your customer? What service or benefit does your product offer? What category is your product? What is your value proposition? Do you have a business card?
  • Photographing Your Artwork: Do you have a digital camera? Do you have Photoshop or Elements? Do you know someone who does?
