The Photo Review Benefit AuctionAUCTION TO BENEFIT THE PHOTO REVIEW, Vintage and Contemporary Work by an International Who’s Who of Photography Up for Bid

LANGHORNE, PA–The Photo Review, a critical journal of photography, will hold its Annual Benefit Auction on Saturday, October 11, 2014, at 7 p.m. at Hamilton Hall, University of the Arts at Broad and Pine Streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The event will feature an international slate of photographers as well as a host of Philadelphia artists. Beginning and experienced collectors alike will have the opportunity to bid on work by such historic masters as Charles Aubry, Édouard Baldus, Antonio Beato, Charles Bierstadt, Karl Blossfeldt, Samuel Bourne, Brassaï, Anne Brigman, Edward S. Curtis, Madame D’Ora, Baron De Meyer, Frank Eugene, Frederick Evans, Arnold Genthe, Mario Giacomelli, Elias Goldensky, F. Jay Haynes, William Henry Jackson, Inge Morath, Wm. Notman & Son, Ruth Orkin,Edward Steichen, Josef Sudek, Isaiah West Taber, Wilhelm von Gloeden, and Stanislaw Walery.

Among the contemporary photo stars whose work will go on the block are Mariette Pathy Allen, Bill Bernstein, Gay Block, Andrew Borowiec, Douglas Busch, Barbara Crane, Jeff Curto, Bruce Davidson, John Dugdale, Chris Earnshaw, James Fee, Harold Feinstein, Fran Forman, Joy Goldkind, Lois Greenfield, Robert Hirsch, Michael Kenna, David Lebe, Helen Marcus, Joe Mills, Sebastião Salgado, Lynn Saville, Aline Smithson, Harvey Stein, George Tice, Hiroshi Watanabe, and Dimitris Yeros.

Featured local luminaries include Justyna Badach, Andrea M. Baldeck, John J. Carlano, Paul Cava, Paula Chamlee, Gerald Cyrus, Sandra C. Davis, Edmund Eckstein, Susan Fenton, Larry Fink, David Graham, Catherine Jansen, Bruce Katsiff, Andrea Modica, Stuart Rome, Laurence Salzmann, Thomas John Shillea, Michael A. Smith, Christine Welch, William Earle Williams, and Stanley Wulc.

In addition, a broad range of 19th-century and vernacular photographs is up for bid, including one of H. A. Atwell‘s famous circus photographs. According to The Photo Review editor Stephen Perloff, prices will range from $50 to $7,000. A silent auction, concurrent with the live auction, will feature photography equipment and supplies, museum memberships, theater tickets, books, certificates for photo classes, restaurant meals, etc. Lodima Archival Materials has provided matting for Photo Review auction items.

The Photo Review will present Project Basho with The 2014 Photo Review Award for Services to the Field of Photography, at a reception from 6 to 7 p.m. on October 11, immediately preceding the auction.

A preview will be held at the University of the Arts on Friday, October 10, from 11 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Saturday, October 11 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., just prior to the auction. Proceeds from the auction, a popular event since 1981, fund such activities as an annual juried competition for emerging photographers. The auction will also feature an open bar and live jazz by the Julian Hartwell Trio. Admission is $20 general, $15 students and includes the fully illustrated catalog. Philadelphia artist Linda Dubin Garfield will participate in the annual Philadelphia Open Studio Tours October 25 & 26, 1- 5 PM at the Crane Arts Building, Studio 101, 1400 N. American Streets in Northern Liberties. On Sunday, participants will have the opportunity to do hand printing themselves using water- based inks as they did last year. Linda Dubin Garfield will have framed and unframed original prints and mixed media work for sale at special POST prices.

A percentage of proceeds from sales will benefit breastcancer.org. NORTH of HERE at Twenty-Two Gallery

PHS Flower Show Wins Top International Prize

‘ARTiculture’ earns record 17 awards from IFEA

PHILADELPHIA (September 2014) – The PHS Philadelphia Flower Show received 17 international awards for excellence for the 2014 presentation, “ARTiculture” – including the top prize, the Grand Pinnacle Gold Award — at ceremonies held Sept. 29 in Kansas City, Mo. The honors included five Gold Awards, five Silver, and seven Bronze Awards in the International Festival & Events Association competition.

This was the greatest number of prizes ever received by the PHS Philadelphia Flower Show in the IFEA contest, which includes entries from the Kentucky Derby Festival, Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade, Indianapolis 500 Festival, National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C., City of Dublin Irish Festival, Edmonton Heritage Festival, Ludwig Von Beethoven Festival in Krakow, Rotterdam Festivals; and the World Gourmet Summit in Singapore.

The Flower Show was recognized in a variety of presentation, programming and promotional categories. The prizes included Gold Awards for the show’s Entrance Garden, community outreach program, green practices at the event, and show merchandise.

The winners were announced at the IFEA/Haas & Wilkerson Pinnacle Awards Ceremony held during the association’s 59th annual convention and expo. The awards for the Flower Show were earned in the following categories:

  • BEST FULL-LENGTH TV PROMOTION (6ABC PREVIEW SHOW) – GOLD
  • BEST MISCELLANEOUS ON-SITE DÉCOR (ENTRANCE GARDEN) — GOLD

  • BEST MONEY-MAKING IDEA (MAKE & TAKE ROOM) – GOLD

  • BEST MISCELLANEOUS CLOTHING (SCARF) — SILVER
  • BEST CHILDREN’S PROGRAMMING (BUTTERFLY EXPERIENCE) — SILVER

  • BEST SOCIAL MEDIA SITE (FACEBOOK) – BRONZE

The entries included programs, merchandise, print and broadcast ads and media campaigns, posters and graphics, websites and apps, and many other categories.

The PHS Philadelphia Flower Show provides inspirational and informative displays, educational presentations, and entertainment. The 2014 Flower Show attracted 230,000 visitors from around the world.

Tickets are now on sale for the 2015 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show, which will celebrate the movies on February 28 to March 8 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center… It’s “Lights, Camera, BLOOM.”
