ARTsisters is a group of professional women artists who empower each other and the community through their artARTsisters was founded in December 2005, by Linda Dubin Garfield who realized that her long-time friend and fellow artist Leslie DeBrocky (since deceased) functioned as more than a friend when it came to discussing and helping with her art. She was really an ARTsister, one who understood the process and could really understand the highs and lows involved with the challenges of a professional artist. Together they opened membership to other women and, through word of mouth, now have 24 members and an email list of more than 75 interested women artists. Sharing resources and offering support to each other, the members now have shown, both individually and in groups,  including shows in Chestnut Hill, Old City, Manayunk, Wayne, Wynnewood, the Wilmington Arts Commission in Delaware, the Widener University Art Gallery and the City of Philadelphia Board of Ethics. This spring ARTsisters will have their 10th Anniversary ART Show at Jenkins Arboretum.

In Reverse

Terri Fridkin, MUSE GalleryMy Better Half, monoprint by Terri FridkinMUSE Gallery

“Local printmaker Terri Fridkin will be having her first solo show entitled In Reverse at MUSE Gallery, 52 N. 2nd Street in Old City Philadelphia from October 1 through November 2, 2014. The public is invited to a First Friday Reception on October 3, 5- 7 PM and an Artist’s Reception on Saturday, October 18, 3- 5 PM.  She will also be participating in POST, Philadelphia Open Studio Tour on Saturday and Sunday, October 25 and 26, from noon until 5 PM.

Terri Fridkin is a National Honor Society Graduate of Drexel University Nesbitt College of Design Arts. She worked in the industry for many years and took classes in different media, finally finding herself in a printmaking class. This fueled her lifelong passion for art so she left work to devote more time to fulfill this dream, studying printmaking at various studios and art centers in Pennsylvania and New York.

Since exhibiting her work in 2012, Terri Fridkin has been in numerous invitational and juried shows. Selected exhibitions include Woodmere Art Museum, The State Museum of Pennsylvania, City Hall in Philadelphia, Widener University and various art centers and diverse venues in the tristate area. Terri is a member of MUSE Gallery, The American Color Print Society, and The Cheltenham Guild of Printmakers. Her work is in private collections in New York and Pennsylvania.

Her design background and years of meticulous and precise renderings have influenced her current work. Structure, pattern, line, and color, are the underpinnings of her prints. They provide discipline and a comforting sense of order to counteract the uncertainty and chaos that exists in our world today.

Terri Fridkin’s fascination with printmaking is influenced by the fusion of techniques along with the spontaneous and intuitive creative process. Each hand-pulled layer is formed by the previous one, which dictates the next, as the composition develops a strong graphic imagery. This is achieved by using multiple plates and matrices with transparent and opaque layers of soy-based inks, her medium of choice, along with water based inks, and acrylics. Experimentation, invention, and discovery are the driving forces that inspire her.”

Color Coordinates

Color Coordinates, smART Business Consulting

smARTbusinessconsulting.org is organizing a group art show and sale entitled Color Coordinates, May 7- 25, 2014 at Da Vinci Art Alliance, 704 Catharine Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147 featuring the art of Lynne Berman, Linda Dubin Garfield, Diane Lachman, Joye Schwatrz and Nancy Freeman Tabas. There will be ceramics, watercolors, oils, works on paper and acrylics included in this show. The Opening Reception on May 7, 6:30 to 10 PM is open to the public.

Lynne Berman’s ceramics reflect her simplicity and interest in architecture. In the fall of 1994, she quit work at The Philadelphia Inquirer to join her husband on a year’s sabbatical. In Boston Miami and London, she took pottery courses. By the end of the year, she knew she was a potter. She loves the feel of the clay passing through her fingers. She love cities. Her work, mostly thrown on the wheel, focuses on the geometric simplicity of city buildings. “Perfection is finally attained not when there is no longer anything to add but when there is no longer anything to take away, when a body has been stripped to its nakedness.” Antoine de Saint-Exupery (1900-1944), French aviator, writer.

Linda Dubin Garfield creates colorful works on paper that combine traditional printmaking, mixed media & digital technology based on her love of travel, the mystery of memory & the magic of place. Nature nurtures and inspires her. She combines elements of nature, texture and design along with the magic of the press. She is intrigued by memory and what remains in her mind’s eye. Her work reflects scenes from travel near and far. More than a report on how it was exactly, she is interested in her expressive and passionate response to the color and pattern of the landscape, experience or image. Rather than representing every detail, she evokes the hidden and reveal the atmosphere, creating personal visual memoirs that the viewer responds to, triggering a memory or experience .

Color is Diane Lachman’s  primary source of inspiration.  She is interested in how color defines our idea of form, and how color choice determines interpretation.  Her years of experience teaching color theory at the University of Pennsylvania complements her intuitive approach to painting.  Recent works explore the analogy between color-guided composition and musical expression.

Joye Schwartz loves interpreting the emotionality of a subject through brilliant color and simple shapes. For her painting involves a sensual journey using watercolor or oils, feeling the juiciness of the oil with her palette knife or playing with the watery color dripping down the paper. Her paintings evolve through the visual discovery of the landscape, figure or still life. Vivid color brings the scene alive and full of life and joy.

Nancy Freeman Tabas’ artwork is a projection of her personality; energetic, spontaneous full of life and passion.  Every painting, like every day, is new and exciting to Tabas. Her landscapes are realistic abstraction. They are an exploration of color, form and imagery.  She sees the world as bright and hopeful and tries to portray this through her work.
