Shifting Representations of Queer Identities
January 18th – 29th, 2017

This call is open to LGBTQ artists working in all mediums.
Work submitted must address personal, private, and public perceptions of the queer self and may also reflect on how these have historically changed over time. We are excited to have juror Craig Bruns, artist and Chief Curator at the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia as the juror for the show.

Deadline to submit is Saturday, January 7th, 2017, mid-night 
Submissions coming in after the deadline will not be accepted.
Notification of Acceptance Thursday, January 8th 2017

  • APPLICATION FEE IS $20 FOR MEMBERS AND $30 FOR NON-MEMBERS.  FEE COVERS MULTIPLE SUBMISSIONS WHICH ARE ENCOURAGED.

“The Sketch Club responded to the educational needs of the arts community in the early 1870’s when the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts was awaiting completion of its new building and was without instructional facilities. Under the auspices of the Club, life drawing classes were conducted with Thomas Eakins as instructor. Lectures on anatomy were also delivered. When the Academy opened its new building in 1876, Eakins, an honorary member of the Club, volunteered to take over its life classes, undoubtedly utilizing his teaching experiences gained at the Sketch Club. By 1894 the Sketch Club had 400 active members, including many instructors at the Academy. Thomas P. Anshutz, who succeeded Eakins at the Academy, was President of the Club from 1910 until his untimely death in 1912. When World War I forced the world famous illustrator and etcher Joseph Pennell to leave Europe, he returned to Philadelphia and served as President of the Club in 1921.” – The Philadelphia Sketch Club

“Domenic B. DiStefano (1924-2011)

Born in Provincetown, Massachusetts, Domenic DiStefano was especially known for his marine and landscape watercolors of Cape Ann, Massachusetts. During most of his career he lived and taught in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania; but he spent his summers painting and conducting workshops in Rockport and Gloucester, Massachusetts.

A Dolphin Fellow of the American Watercolor Society and a member of the Salmagundi Club in New York City, he was also a long-time member and past president of the Philadelphia Sketch Club and a member of the Rockport Art Association and the North Shore Art Association

The Philadelphia Sketch Club’s 153rd Annual Exhibition of Small Oil Paintings

The Philadelphia Sketch Club‘s 153rd Annual Exhibition of Small Oil Paintings will run April 8 – 30, 2016 in the Sketch Club’s historic main gallery located on 235 South Camac Street, The Avenue of the Artists, Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Sketch Club‘s 153rd Annual Exhibition of Small Oil Paintings affords an opportunity for today’s artists to connect with many of the great artists of the past. Artists can have their work exhibited in this prestigious exhibition, just as Eakins, Anshutz and N.C. Wyeth did.

The 153rd Annual Exhibition of Small Oil Paintings, presented by The Philadelphia Sketch Club, represents one of the longest running and most prestigious juried exhibitions in the country. This year’s show runs from April 8 through April 30 with a free public reception with awards presentation on April 17 from 2 to 4 PM. The exhibition will feature over 150 works by prominent and emerging artists.

The exhibition awards are not just certificates and cash, but also the R. Tait McKenzie Small Oils Medal. Dr. McKenzie was not only an artist who created Olympic medals, he was also a physician who developed many of the modern theories of physical therapy. He designed a medal specifically for this exhibition. In addition to the three Best in Show awards, there will also be special awards for the best landscape, still life, portrait and abstract. Traditionally, the exhibition also features a work by each of the three jurors.

This year’s Jurors are Alex Kanevsky, Alice Oh and Bill Scott. Originally, in 1863, this show was established to enable artists to display a number of small examples of their works, with the hope that a patron would order a larger painting. The size limitation on the paintings is no larger than 20” x 20”. Prior medal winners in this exhibition have included Paulette Van Roekens, John Folinsbee, Alice Kent Stoddard, Arthur Meltzer, Antonio Martino, Dorothy Van Loan, John Redmond, Doris Silk and Al Gury.

The Philadelphia Sketch Club is a volunteer driven organization, with local artists contributing time and resources toward its mission since 1860. Gallery hours are 1pm to 5pm Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is free for the general public.

Founded in 1860, The Philadelphia Sketch Club is America’s oldest artists’ club. The mission of the Club is to support and nurture working visual artists, the appreciation of the visual arts, visual arts education, and the historical value of the visual arts community.

I am very proud to have three artworks included in the 20th Annual Art Ability Art Exhibition and Sale, Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital. The last time I was included in Art Ability my work was selected to be in group art shows at the Delaware Art Museum, The Philadelphia Foundation and pop up shows at rehab facilities. The exposure, the care, the intention is all about promoting art by artists living with physical challenges. Whenever I think about being part of Art Ability I remember my friend Arnie Segal, a successful sculptor. Arnie introduced me to the benefits of participating in the expansive art exhibition dedicated to art by disabled artists. I’ll post a story about my art in Art Ability on DoNArTNeWs. – DoN

Main Line Art Center Unveils Panorama: Image-Based Art in the 21st Century
Two-month extravaganza features 15+ programs across greater-Philadelphia, free evening festival, and virtual exhibition opportunities.
September 12 – November 4, 2015

HAVERFORD, PA (July 29, 2015) — Fresh off the heels of Main Line Art Center’s new digital media program and building and campus expansion, the Center, located in Haverford, announces the unveiling of the first annual Panorama: Image-Based Art in the 21st Century.  The two-month happening runs September 12 through November 4, 2015 and is a celebration of the photographic image and its expansive role in contemporary artforms like digital photography, printmaking, video, film, animation, and gaming design.  Panorama is supported by Wilkie Lexus and Main Line Today (as of July 28, 2015).

Anchored by the on-site exhibition Modern Utopias and a dynamic and interactive evening festival at Main Line Art Center, Panorama features physical and virtual exhibitions, lectures, portfolio reviews, and educational programs held at Main Line Art Center led by accomplished artists who utilize digital technology to deliver the unexpected.  In addition to the programs occurring on the Art Center’s campus, Panorama includes image-based programs produced by Creative Partners, arts and culture organizations spanning from Philadelphia to Lehigh County.  As of July 28, 2015, Creative Partners include ArtsQuest, the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, Gravy Studio & Gallery, inliquid.com, James Oliver Gallery, Pentimenti Gallery, Philadelphia’s Art in City Hall, Philadelphia Photo Arts Center, The Print Center, and Silicon Gallery Fine Art Prints.  For a list of Creative Partner programs, visit www.mainlineart.org.

The focal point of Panorama is Modern Utopias, the featured exhibition on view in Main Line Art Center’s galleries September 12 through November 4.  Curated by Main Line Art Center Executive Director Amie Potsic, Modern Utopias presents compelling visions of modern existence, human potential, and virtual realities through works by Marjan Moghadden (New York, NY), Noah Addis (Columbus, OH), and Nicole Patrice Dul (Philadelphia, PA).  The Art Center will host an Artist Talk & Opening Reception on Friday, September 18 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, and Artist Nicole Patrice Dul will present a two-day workshop on her process, Solarplate Etching, on Tuesday, September 29 and October 6 from 6:30 to 9:30 pm.

Beginning September 12, anyone, regardless of age or experience, can contribute to the Panorama virtual exhibition, which will be available on Main Line Art Center’s newly redesigned website in December.  Community members are encouraged to visit Community Partners, which include gardens, parks and green spaces in the greater-Philadelphia area, or other locations to document what utopia means to them, and then upload their digital photograph or video to www.mainlineart.org.

Finally, virtual and hands-on collide at Main Line Art Center on Saturday, October 24 from 5 to 9 pm for the high-energy Panorama Festival featuring music and entertainment, food trucks, live art experiences, innovative art-making, digital demos, and more.  Artist Tim Portlock will light up the night with a presentation of site-specific work, kicking-off the Center’s new Digital Artist in Residency Program.

Main Line Art Center is the community’s home to discover, create, and experience visual art.  A frequent recipient of Best of Awards for its beautiful galleries and high-quality art instruction, the Center’s visual art classes and contemporary and innovative exhibitions stimulate creativity, conversation, and joy. The mission of the Art Center is to inspire and engage artistic creativity for all ages and abilities and celebrate and strengthen the essential role of visual art in community life.  Last year 16,000 people found inspiration at Main Line Art Center, including artists with disabilities in the Center’s Accessible Art Programs, now in their 51st year, and 80,000 others were touched through the Center’s programs in the community.
