Coupling

Coupling, Off the Wall Gallery

Some of you have doubtless seen the publicity up at Dirty Frank’s/OFF THE WALL GALLERY touting COUPLING as the theme of our upcoming NINTH ANNUAL JURIED EXHIBITION, which closes to entries in just 35 days (OCTOBER 31) and runs from November 24 to December 27.

As is always the case when we cast a somewhat wider net with our juried themes, we are seeking entries IN ALL MEDIA and leaving quite a lot in the EYE OF THE SUBMITTER.

In this case, we are looking for artwork that captures YOUR TAKE ON TWO — TOGETHER.  From the obvious to things we’ve never thought of, we want to see how your art delves into (to stay alliterative) the power only pairs can possess.  Examples may include:

  •  How human beings come together collaboratively & harmoniously.
  •  How nature is filled with dualities & dyads.
  •  Why two mechanical structures working in tandem produce greater output.
  •  Why some pairings dovetail naturally: bow & arrowthunder & lightning.
  • …especially when it comes to food and drink: salt & peppergin & tonic.
  •  Why other pairings are inseparable though opposite: yin & yangbass & treble.
  •  Why culture intertwines others still: death & taxesAstaire & Rogers.
  •  How civil rights can play a part, such as with the recent DOMA ruling.

Again, we’re capping the size limit for FRAMED 2D work at 48 INCHES in combined dimensions (height + width).  As always we also add on the need that 2D weigh 15 pounds or less because of the age of our beloved Wall.  It’s getting up there, so we need to be careful about what we put up there.

And remember that even if you’ve entered one of our summer juried shows, there are two special stipulations to our year-ending juried exhibitions:

* FEES/PRIZES: There is an entry fee of $5 per work because those resources fund CASH PRIZES of up to $500, the largest going to the winner of the coveted MARY-ROWE MEMORIAL JURY PRIZE, the show’s top accolade.

* ENTRIES ON DISC: While our juries always deliberate based on digital images, jpegs for this show must be submitted ON DISC ONLY, together with your entry fee.  These can be dropped off or mailed.

With this e-mail, we’re delivering the all-important ENTRY FORM IN TWO WAYS:
* ATTACHED here as a PDF, and, (request an e-mail from Togo)
* ONLINE at…
http://issuu.com/offthewallgallery/docs/issuu_coupling_brochure

Please USE AND SHARE this form however you wish: print it down or fill out the PDF; feel free to post the form on Facebook and other social media platforms, share it on your own blogs, and forward it to directly to other artists who might interested.

And do read through the IMPORTANT INFORMATION the application contains.  There’s plenty of information and stipulations to guide your entries, from how we want you to size and present your image files — so critical because high-quality, properly sized jpegs, together with your explanatory statement of how your work connects to the theme, is the primary gauge the jury will use to select all of the art for WHAT’S YOUR INSPIRATION — to when to expect to deliver WIRED, READY TO HANG work IF one or more of your pieces is accepted.  We surely hope that’s the case!

As always, we WELCOME YOUR QUESTIONS, and the jury, Jody and I look forward to your entries!

All the best,
Togo Travalia, Manager

Out of Hand

Out of Hand, Gina Michaels at iMPeRFeCT Gallery

Blue Fingers, bronze, 22 x 17 x 14″, Rushen (detail), bronze, 20 x 13 x 10″

Out of HandGina Michaels’ solo show at iMPeRFeCT Gallery

October 12 – November 2, 2013, Artist’s Reception Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013 5:00-8:00pm

From the beginning, Gina Michaels sculpture is Out of Hand. Her sculpture practice starts in a sandbox. She presses her hands (and feet) into casting sand, sculpting directly in the mold. She then ladles molten bronze directly into the hollows created by the body. The resulting forms are welded into “Hand Plants,” at once animal, vegetable and mineral. They can be read as lovingly cultivated hybrids, or as random and disturbing mutations. The work is full of visual puns and double entendres, with a dose of slapstick. Sometimes modeled figures perch in trees that grow out of the palm of a hand, adding a narrative, mythic dimension. The work can be as small as a few inches high, or eight feet tall. In addition to creating sculpture, Michaels makes nature prints, which will also be on view.

Gina Michaels work will be at iMPeRFeCT Gallery in Germantown from October 12 – November 2. There will be an artist’s reception on Saturday October 12, 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. iMPeRFeCT Gallery is a not-for-profit alternative art space that is both international and community based. Founders Renny Molenaar and Rocio Cabello bring their experience running alternative spaces in New York, contributing a new voice to the Philadelphia art community.

Gina Michaels artwork has been featured in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States, including Paula Barr Chelsea Gallery, Ceres Gallery, and the Prince Street Gallery in New York City; Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey; the Woodmere Art Museum, City Hall, Fairmount Park and Projects Gallery in Philadelphia; and the El Paso in Palm Desert, California. Additional information about the artist and her work can be found at www.ginamichaels.com.

The Levoy Theatre, a Vision for Millville

The Levoy Theatre‘s renovation took many years and was finally accomplished in 2012. The story of how the town of Millville New Jersey brought this theater back to prominence after years of neglect involves the heroic efforts of dedicated citizens, theater people, artists, and public officials. It is a story that may inspire other American towns struggling with a poor economy. The Levoy Theatre sends out the message that art can indeed make life better, for individuals as well as communities. – John Thornton

“The story of the Levoy is the story of the people who built it, owned it, worked in it and patronized it. It is a story filled with triumph and defeat, happiness and sadness. It is exactly the story you might expect from an historic icon that’s commanded Millville’s High Street for over a century.

The first Levoy Theatre filled a ten year void left in Millville after the 1898 fire that destroyed the Wilson Opera House (once at High and Sassafras Sts.), Millville’s largest theatre of the 19th century. By 1908 Millville needed a new source of entertainment, and William “Pop” Somers of Atlantic City and Somers Point fame came to Millville seeing the opportunity for his Levoy.” – The Levoy Theatre website
