“We celebrate our best non-human friends in so many ways: from giving them toys and treats, positive affirmation and unconditional love, to sharing their personalities, devotion, affectionate natures and playfulness with the world.

Our 11th Annual Juried Exhibition finds a new way to celebrate our pets, even as it creatively interweaves all of these ways. You know what we’re talking about…ART!

We cordially invite you to join us to welcome PETS at our OPENING RECEPTION, which takes place THIS THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 7-10 PM. As always, we will serve light hors d’oeuvres, pour your favorite drinks, convene the company of fellow art lovers and offer the chance to meet most of the 42 artists whose AWWW-inspiring pet projects line our Wall and 3D space.

Plus, PETS has something brand-new in store: the chance to give back. Every time we sell artwork from PETS, 20% of the proceeds go to the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) and Street Tails Animal Rescue.

Our modest philanthropy is inspired in part by the generosity of spirit that is so easy to find among the 76 works in PETS, across a wide array of media:

* You have to know that PHOTOGRAPHY — what all of us use to document our pets’ lives — has a big role. Our artists elevate the form. Exquisite silver gelatin darkroom prints from AMANDA ABRAMSON on the B&W section of our Wall (a curatorial choice by JODY SWEITZER, which is stunning), take us from Lambertville to Brooklyn to the city we have close to our hearts right now, Paris. ALEXANDRA ORGERA‘s medium-format digital print is a story waiting to be told; use your imagination! Meanwhile, TRI NGUYEN‘s housebound images show us what we should be doing with our smartphones: distilling the everyday into simple, heartfelt, magical moments.

* PAINTING encompasses a range of media: BOB GORCHOV‘s irresistible, fan-favorite acrylics; MINA SMITH‘s enchanting watercolor of dog walkers at work; ALBERT ALDINGER‘s sweet kitty portrait contrasted with BILL GROVE‘s tough alley cat; JOCELYNN TICE‘s breathtakingly photorealistic pastel of owner and pet; and CYNTHIA HARVEY‘s rendering of a cat-ism: the hours of joy that can be found in crumbled paper from a delivery box.

* We could not have custom-ordered a more skillful range of PRINTMAKING. Three different techniques are rendered with precision and heart. ELIZABETH STRICKER‘s impeccable woodblock print fills a physical yin-yang space with one curled up cat conveying Zen-like tranquility. ALYSE C. BERNSTEIN shows how printing a lithograph from marble stone can inject subtle beauty into her dog Frank taking a nap. And MARLISE M. TKACZUK, well into her second decade as one of the most popular OFF THE WALL artists, brings down the house with her adoptive feline kids and their demanding ways.

These are the major categories but it’s hardly all here. PETS has amazing range. Outliers include ELIZABETH H. MACDONALD‘s bobbin lace goldfish, joined by NOA TRAVALIA‘s abstract assembled-paper koi; CARLA LIGUORI‘s new terracotta sculpture, suggesting pet-like relationships can be forged with wild creatures; SARAH BRETT‘s stunning debut, which puts front and center a ceramic from her “hiney” body of work (we kid you not!); and the always kidding work of BOB JACKSON, whose 23 mixed media assemblages establish a record that will NEVER be broken. (Yes, all 23 were juried into this show!) Read the titles before you take in the work and you appreciate Bob’s ribald sense of humor.

That’s only 17 artists, leaving 25 I haven’t mentioned. 25! And four of these artists — Sarah, Alyse, Liz and Albert — are new to OFF THE WALL; they are joined by 10 more colleagues showing in our space for the very first time. And NINE ARTISTS will win CASH PRIZES TOTALING $550. Who? We’ll find out at the Opening Reception.

Oh, and remember to change the water bowl, maybe get in that walk and put out some fresh dry food before you come over. OR bring your dog to the opening. “The new work is called ‘RUINED’. Although I am a painter, these works are really constructions. I burn my old canvases and add bits of wood, tape, wire, screening and metal to create a seemingly random composition that actually works. A number of these pieces have a work on either side of the canvas. As I work on one exposed side off the  canvas, inevitably the other side begins to take on its own life as well.It has been said of these works:

City Hall Art Exhibit Celebrates the ADA at 25

Philadelphia, PA In celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Art In City Hall presents Creative Voices – the ADA at 25, featuring the artistic achievements of Philadelphia area artists and local organizations serving people with disabilities.  The exhibit will be located on the 1st, 2nd and 4th floors of City Hall, NE corner.

An artist reception is scheduled for Thursday, June 18th, from 5-7 pm in the Council Caucus Room, City Hall, 4th floor.

Creative Voices is presented in collaboration with the following partners: Arc of Philadelphia, Art-Reach, Form in Art-Philadelphia Museum of Art, HMS School for Children with Cerebral Palsy, Main Line Art Center, Mayor’s Commission on People with Disabilities, Mid-Atlantic ADA Center, Moss Rehab-Einstein Hospital Network, Office of Councilman Dennis O’Brien, Pennhurst Memorial and Preservation Alliance, Pennsylvania History Coalition Honoring People with Disability, Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, and 10 professional artists from the Philadelphia region:

Nancy Alter, DoN Brewer, Elizabeth Core, Gerard di Falco, Eiko Fan, Terri Fridkin, Beth Ann Johnson, David Neisser, Tecu’Mish Munha’Ke and Carol Saylor.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) came into effect in 1990 as a civil rights law prohibiting discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The purpose of the law is to ensure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.

Creative Voices will include the story of Pennhurst, an early twentieth century asylum created at a time when people with disabilities were considered a “threat” to society.  This historical narrative, presented by Pennhurst Memorial and Preservation Alliance and the Pennsylvania History Coalition Honoring People with Disability, will serve as a reminder to how far society has come, and features the important work of the Arc of Philadelphia – part of SpArc Philadelphia – one of the organizations responsible for the closure of Pennhurst.

James Wilson, a board member of the Arc of Philadelphia, reflects on his involvement with the ADA and ending Pennhurst: “These were tumultuous times leading to huge advances in opening the schools, establishing community services and ultimately ADA. The Pennhurst case spurred changes to the Social Security Act and in the establishment of community services across the country, ultimately leading to the Americans with Disabilities Act.  All this started with Pennhurst.”

SpArc Philadelphia’s Cultural Arts Center will celebrate the work of its artists beside the Pennhurst display on the fourth floor near City Council Chambers.  Their participating artists are:

Yolanda Hilliard, Richard Johnston, James Sanders and Jennifer Williams.

The Art Gallery at City Hall, located on the first floor within the Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, will feature works by professional artists, including artists from Main Line Art Center and Moss Rehab’s permanent collection.  The gallery will also partner with Art-Reach to host a workshop for the visually impaired led by ceramic artist Beth McGuigan on Monday, June 8th.  The finished clay sculptures will be on display on June 18th for the opening reception.  Visitors who are visually impaired or legally blind will be encouraged to touch these works on exhibit.

“Having City Hall as a venue to celebrate the ADA’s 25th anniversary shows how the power of art can be a platform to celebrate one of the most important pieces of legislation in current history,” said City of Philadelphia’s Chief Cultural Officer, Helen E. Haynes. “Creative Voices connects art to civil rights.”

Near the Offices of the Mayor on the second floor, Creative Voices will present works by student artists from Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, the HMS School for Children with Cerebral Palsy, and works by Romaine Samworth and Michael Gieschen from the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Form in Art program.

Philadelphia will take part in the national celebration of the 25th anniversary of the ADA on July 25th at City Hall and the National Constitution Center.  The ADA Legacy Tour Bus will promote its theme: Disability Rights are Civil Rights at both locations before heading to Washington D.C. on July 26th, the official birthdate of the ADA.  For more information, visit: http://www.adaanniversary.org/

Instrumental in bringing this celebration to Philadelphia is Charles Horton from the Mayor’s Commission on People with Disabilities, and Councilman Dennis O’Brien, a tireless advocate for people with intellectual and developmental disability.

“Our community has accomplished many great things over the years and the ADA has been the catalyst for change,” said Charles Horton. “Legislatively, economically and socially we as a community have begun to reach a level of empowerment and inclusion and therefore we must continue our fight for independence.”

Councilman Dennis O’Brien also recognized the impact of the ADA: “While we still have a long way to go, the ADA has opened so many doors for individuals with disabilities and this artwork is a celebration of that.”

Creative Voices – the ADA at 25 runs from June 8th to July 31st.

Philadelphia, PA – The Center for Emerging Visual Artists (CFEVA) is pleased to present Drawing Conclusions an exhibition by CFEVA LandLab Artists in Residence. The exhibition will be on view in CFEVA’s gallery April 13 to May 22. There will be Artist Talks and a Reception on Thursday, April 30 from 5-7pm. There will be a closing reception featuring botanical cocktails by WE THE WEEDS on May 22 from 5-7pm. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 11am – 5pm and by appointment.

Drawing Conclusions features the work of LandLab Artist in Residents Jake BeckmanLeslie Birch, Hagan/Mills/Mills and WE THE WEEDS. This exhibition focuses on the results of each artist’s installation at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education and how the outcomes of their residency inform ecological restoration issues. Each artist will present the results of their installations, including documentation of the evolution of their installation over time, data collected and how their artistic process is influenced by the residency.

LandLab is a unique artist residency program that operates on multiple platforms: artistic creation, ecological restoration and education. A joint project of The Center for Emerging Visual Artists (CFEVA) and the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education (SCEE) LandLab offers resources and space on the Schuylkill Center’s 340-acre wooded property for visual artists to engage audiences in the processes of ecological stewardship through scientific investigation and artistic creation.

Jake Beckman is a sculptor and educator living and working in Philadelphia. Jake teaches Art and Design at the Community College of Philadelphia and graduated with an M.F.A. in Sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design and a B.A. in Art from Swarthmore College. In addition to making work that explores systems and materials that sustain our way of life through a wide range of media, Jake has had a lifelong interest in biology, chemistry and many of the other physical sciences. His work explores themes of transformation, process and legibility as he grapples with the relationship between labor, value and substance. Jake is interested in the origins of the manufactured environment, as well as a concept of the displaced and abstracted landscape; a landscape in which earth and rock are mined, crushed, sintered, shipped and recompiled into an ordered system of buildings, cities, and bridges. He uses the visual language of industry, as well as the raw ingredients of the built environment— coal, stone, ore, etc.—to explore the memory of a time when Americans were more intimately connected to the processes that constructed and sustained their material surroundings.

Leslie Birch fancies herself a tech geisha in Philadelphia. Her fascination with the combination of interactive art and robots led her swiftly to electronics. An original member of The Hacktory in Philadelphia, Leslie is an authority on LED “Throwies” and Arduino microcontrollers. Her artistic practice has led her to working with Leah Buechly, inventor of the first stitchable microcontroller and winning NASA’s International Space Apps Challenge for the Orbit Skirt – a skirt that can track the International Space Station, as well as Senti-8, a wrist band that allows astronauts to experience the scents they miss. More recently, another invention, the FLORAbrella, has garnered attention around the world as a color sensing umbrella that can match clothing and do rainbow patterns. Currently Leslie creates projects and tutorials for Adafruit, a DIY electronics company in New York promoting education. She can also be found blogging about wearables for both Adafruit and Element 14. Her hangout is Hive76, a hackerspace promoting open source hardware in the Spring Garden area. When not hacking hardware, Leslie shares her tech love through speaking engagements, teaching at the library’s MakerJawn program and planning events like LadyHacks. Her free time is spent hiking, camping, letterboxing and birding. Yes, she loves Star Wars and you can follow her @zengirl2.

Hagan/Mills/Mills is an arts collaborative consisting of Philadelphia based artists Maggie Mills, Ben Mills and Marguerita Hagan. Their LandLab project, Native Pollinator Garden focuses on Colony collapse Disorder (CCD). Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD)

“is a syndrome defined as a dead colony with no adult bees or dead bee bodies, but with a live queen and usually honey and immature bees still present.” (USDA)

Native Pollinator Garden provides a variety of native blooms that follow three full seasons of succession. This provides forage for several generations of pollinators each year. The beds are constructed of chemical-free Douglas fir, are filled with a blend of organic, local soil and leaf compost, and are planted with native, organically grown plants from a local nursery. Native Pollinator Garden addresses the threats posed by monoculture, non-native species’ parasites and disease, GMO’s, and pesticides. It serves as an example of the importance of local action on an individual level.

WE THE WEEDS is a botanical arts collaboration headed by artist Kaitlin Pomerantz and botanist Zya S. Levy that seeks to highlight and investigate the presence of the natural world within the manmade landscape. Past projects include ethno botanical tours, participatory art and science experiments, public art installations, educational outreach, and culinary and sensory plant experiences. WE THE WEEDS has worked in participation with Practice Gallery, the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, the Asian Arts Initiative, and the Penn Center for Urban Research. The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education inspires meaningful connections between people and nature. We use our forests and fields as a living laboratory to foster appreciation, deepen understanding, and encourage stewardship of the environment.

The Center for Emerging Visual Artists is dedicated to coordinating a strong regional support system for visual artists, to advance the careers of professional artists in the region, to promote relationships between artists and the communities in which they live, and to increase access to and promote interest and understanding of visual art among citizens of the community.
